To Earn A Leaf Charm, and Hopefully More Soon-Novice Log

From Redwall MUCK Wiki

OOC NOTE: Frist this role play took 2 days ICLY to do, also included is the math tests and results. Here is the log of him and Abbot Benar in a classroom for those two mornings.

-Also its fairly long-sorry

Novice Log

RW Abbey: First Classroom

This room is longer than it is wide, with a single barred window set into the outer wall. What wallspace exists seems to be dedicated completely to row upon row of bookshelves, all of them empty. The one exception is the wall at the front of the room, which contains a large slate board being held in place by iron pegs. There are four long tables in here, with chairs scattered about, and a basket on the corner of one of the tables near the front contains many pieces of thick chalk, while another contains at least a score of thin slate boards with wooden frames, about the size, if not thickness, of the average book.

Caleb was tried, but ready for this math test...or tests maybe, he was not sure. He still was working on that report for the champion Magramba but he also needed to do the math also so it’s been a very busy week for him so far. All the studying would hopefully pay off soon.

Benar steps into the room with some blank papers and nods to the novice. He has made sure no cheat sheets is around. He sets out a paper turned upside down, and a couple quill pens and ink "Good morning Caleb and how are you today, ready to see how your skills are?"

Caleb nods slowly "Yes sir, I am ready or as ready as I am gonna be sir abbot"

Benar nods, he also sets out a counting tool or an abacus, "You can you use this, what is it by the way?" He knows but he wants to make sure the novice does.

Caleb smiles "An Abacus used for counting..adding and take away as well. One can also place things such as seeds or small items in groups or count how many is there before or after some is added or taken away."

Benar nods "Very good, first we will do some addition and subtraction, then a little division and multiply ." He will set out the tests as they are done, if the novice flips over the paper it’s add and subtraction first and looks to be 100 problems.

Caleb starts and looks over the problems as he does them, he takes his time on them and checks answers. A couple times he frowns but he takes a deep breath and goes back to the problems. He does not speed through this as this is very important to pass and please the elders.

An hour passes for the first part dealing with add and subtract

Caleb leans back "I am done with this part."

Benar looks over the answers quietly "You have done fairly well, got a few wrong8 out of 100 "Hmmms let’s see perhaps a little more add and subtract problems, let’s see 20 each and we can see how well you do after that" He does have another sheet of different problems ready and places it by the mouse.

Caleb nods and then starts on the problems, double checking answers again and looking them over a little better as he nods, this part he is on for a little over half an hour before he looks up to show he is finished.

Benar checks this over and smiles "Very good only 1 out of 40 wrong, let’s go over the ones wrong from both shall we, I will say the problem and the answer you put and we shall see if you can tell me the correct answer to them and what was done wrong maybe, the first is 6 +16 you said 23,what do you believe is correct?" He also adds "10 +14 is not 14 but maybe that’s a simple mistake on that one"

Caleb answers "The first is 22 and yeah should be 24 on the 2nd one, sorry sir ."

Benar nods "We learn from the mistakes, it’s part of being a novice, you done very well on this test and you have shown you understand basic adding and subtraction, tomorrow we will do a little division and multiply and then see if you have earned a leaf charm or not, so same place and same time tomorrow Novice Caleb"

Caleb nods "Yes sir and thank you sir" He stands and heads out, chores and then more research for that report of the illness some seasons ago...life is busy!

( A DAY PASSES ICLY )

Caleb Is here early, he got up earlier and helped make breakfast and now he is here to finish this test, ink bottle and quill is at the ready and so is he.

Benar enters the room and smiles "Well looks like you’re ready for today then Novice" He sets out the test paper and nods "You may begin." Today is multiply and division, but only 15 of each so this shouldn’t take as long as the day before.

Caleb nods and starts the test, he again takes his time and looks over answers. This is a little different than adding and subtraction, but he did spend some time away from reports to practice his counting last night, over and over again and placing seeds in groups and counting and changing the groups off and on, so he would be better prepared for today.

Benar stays at his own desk and again did make sure no cheat sheets were around.

Caleb smiles as he finishes and hands them in to Benar and then quietly stands before the abbot as he waits for results.

Benar nods and looks them over, he smiles and after a little while he grins "These you have passed 100%, you seem to have done well with your studies Novice Caleb and have from what I have seen worked hard as you have keep with studies and chores and you have not gotten into trouble that I have heard of recently."

Caleb smiles "Yes sir...thank you sir. It’s important to do chores and to also finish a task given. I did get extra infirm cleaning duties once as had a slight slip of the tongue...almost when said someone would kick vermin....well you know but if only happen once and won’t again."

Benar chuckles "Its ok and in telling me you have learned from it shows growth as a novice as that’s always good. No beast is 100% perfect, even me and we should not try to be 100% perfect."

You say, "We try our best to be who we are, to do our best and help out where needed and respect elders and other adults. Help with chores and such. We all have strength and a weakness I was told once and I think that’s very true of all beasts good or bad"

Benar nods again "Yes you show good wisdom and will be a fine Brother one day, but first you need to get to 2nd rank in the novice training and this is one more part you earned." He shows the Yellow leaf charm, Yellow: Has learned very basic arithmetic. "Here Novice Caleb."

Caleb smiles and takes it carefully "Thank you father abbot." He now has the yellow, light green, dark green charms..He still needs the white one: Has completed a simple task set out by an Elder to the satisfaction of that same Elder. This task should try to utilize the skills and values that the novice has been learning. This task can, but does not necessarily need to, involve more than one novice. Each novice who participates to the satisfaction of the task-setting Elder of said task completes the requirement. And he is working on the Red: Has learned the basics of reading and writing. After wards he will earn Acorn: After his requirements are completed, the novice sees the Abbot/Abbess and is given an acorn pin to symbolize their position as a Novice, Second Level. And he hopes at the Summer Feast.

Benar says, "If you will excuse me Novice, I do have some things to do for my Summer Feast"

Caleb nods and then remembers "Oh Abbot Benar...sir...could I try the kiln and making a plate again this week please?"

Benar nods as he stops by the door "Yes, talk to me later today on that, for now I need to get back to some things have a good day" And he exits the room, off to abbot duties

Caleb smiles as he slides the charm next to his other charms and then heads off to the library for some research time, then chores, and then maybe a nap wouldn’t hurt.
