RW Abbey: Bell Tower (Outside)

A magnificent sandstone structure stands tall here on the

edge of the Redwall Abbey open ground near the main building.

Soaring higher then the fabled north gable the towers made

from Redwall's famouse red sandstone blocks has been fully

restored using stones from the old tower and newly quarried

rocks from the original quarry in eastern Mossflower.

The spiral pattern carved into the rock of the tapered

cylinder of the building has been lovingly restored. A double

line of carved stone with depictions of beasts carved into

the deep red sandstone. Badger, Hare, Mole, Mouse, Otter,

Shrew, Sparra and Squirrel. And in light of the new found

friendship with beasts not traditionally of Redwall the motif

continues with Cat, Ferret, Fox, Owl, Rat before repeating the

woodland animals once more.

At the top there is a canopy, as well as a roof made out of

shingles fashioned from some grey sedimentary rock. Held up by

four vertical and three horizontal oak wooden beams. If viewed

at the right angle, the brass shine of two large bells can be

seen hanging from the inside of the tower, forming the defining

piece of the Bell Tower of Redwall.

Above the arched doorway a block of granite has been set in a

frame of Sandstone. Choosen for its long lasting nature and

expertly carved with this message.

Oz sits by the bell tower steps. Sister Jenny is with some dibbuns in the open ground as they play some sort of game of tag.

Zee steps over and stares at his nephew a while before he speaks," I heard ya may be telling the snow badger to not visit, why be that lad? If it's help ya want..you got me and couple others that Caleb lad and ..whoever mouse maid..Cyn...something"

Oz tilts his head as he listens, "He is not coming this winter solstice...wait you saw Caleb and Cynthia..when?" Yes he has his attention now.

Zee answers "Yes I saw them, couple days ago in de kitchens and they want the snow badger to come..why?" He frowns, "You sound concerned boy"

Oz sighs “Neither was around all day yesterday or today, they are missing. There was a report of a sheet or sheets found, but no signs of them. I am unsure if it has anything to do with it, but the sheets were all tied together light some sort of rope"

Zee taps his staff “I could have a look around, see if I spot anything. Did they both go missing at the same time?"

Oz nods as he slowly stands" Yes, so almost 2 days now and no signs of either of them. Cynthia did mention some rat named Kyran but I do not know much more than a name but the guards saw no one go outside the..." He frowns more as he seems to connect something “Wait...the sheets...but why would they?"

Flicktail is walking long, his tail just a flicking behind him.

Zee listens and then replies, "TO avoid the gates....I say those two young un's made the sheet rope and got over the wall...it broke from wot hearing but they must of not been hurt or...welll they been found by the wall." He moves a paw along the staff "I can go look in de woods..."

Oz hears Flicktail’s paw steps "Flicktail...greetings..." He tilts his head at Zee," You just have your staff..that’s all"

Flicktail says, "Hello pappa, I was just telling Ben bout the Snow badger...and wot's wrong with Uncle...I mean Zee having just is staff?"

Zee goes to bop the other badger on the head, not hard just a slightly rough tap as he use to when he was younger, He does answer the fox “OH Snow badger be a coming soon...and trust me he is, now as fer me staff, tis has a secret, I will be fine trust me"

Oz growls slightly and rubs his head, he takes a step back, "He isn’t this season, but enough on that" He gets more serious “Caleb and Cynthia is missing and has been for a couple days now....might be with a rat "

Flicktail asks, "why would Caleb go with a Rat? And why would Zee go anywhere alone when I want someone to go with"

Zee looks at the fox, “I may be old lad but I am not weak and helpless...and it's just a possible thing that the rat has those young uns, but I do hope not"

Oz shakes his head, yes he is concern not just for the young beasts missing but for Zee, "Take the sword, might fare better than the staff" He says quietly.

Flicktail says, "I am not helpless either, but I like being with a friend, and I have a magic sword that wants to be used for good. You would not deny a Magic sword would ya?"

Zee replies "I will take ya Brother's sword if I feel the need." Then again he will probably take it anyways just in case, he turns to Flicktail "A sword is not magic Flicktail, it's a weapon...a sword that is all, the one who wields it is the one who determs a win or lost, not the sword it's self"

Oz leans back and listens, he could easily go around them but for now he stays where he is and simplify listens.

Flicktail says, "Well this one came from Martin and it is magic to me, and used fer good. Are ya saying I am not good enough to go with ya..or not welcome?"

Zee answers "I did not say you couldn't come. you can come help look but I am leaving here soon...." He walks over to Oz and hugs him as he speaks to him quietly "And you...try to cheer up, and don't worry about those young ones either and we can talk later on this snow badger issue." He steps back and looks at Flicktail, “You have an hour then I am heading off...." He heads on to the main building.

Oz just nods and listens as he walks off and sighs as he sits back down staying quiet.

Flicktail goes over to sit by Pappa

Oz knows Flicktail is there but doesn’t get up, "What?" He says quietly. Wait...is he crying? He may be silent but there is tears

Flicktail asks as he puts a reassuring paw on the badger's shoulder "Can I help?"

Oz sniffs and he wipes away some tears, "Not in the way I would like...just last few days...winter is coming and this snow badger talk and...just reminds me of Zork, this being his favorite time of the seasons and he would..well get the snow badger to come for the dibbuns" What he knows Flicktail still believes in the snow badger and so he isn't gonna tell him anything else on the subject....yep snow badger is real...:P

Flicktail says, "Actually Papa...I was hopeing to get Sister Zinnia to play the snow badger this season...It's good to remember our friends, I read a book in library says, when you think of them... they can hear ya in the Dark forest, your memories light their way"

Oz shakes his head “Well...Zinnia won't be able to...." Ok maybe the fox dos know the truth"I ..do not want to, not this season too depressing"

Flicktail says, "Well I promise you the Snow badger WILL come this season..and I understand"

Oz says, "I..helped last time, only cause Zork asked, before that he did a...few times...." He nods and then if allowed goes to gently hug the fox quietly, just spend time with his friend. Least till that hour is up as he sighs"Help me inside, then you best get going with Uncle Zee..he..WILL leave without you"

Flicktail says, "No worries there Papa.. there be a Sparra warrior watching him friend o mine." He helps the badger up and leads him inside the main abbey building.

Oz goes to his room where he has some mint tea and then goes to bed.
