OOC: This is Hale and her friend Wildefray, who is paying a visit to the camp.

Hale is lying quietly on the pond banks, trying to teach herself to enjoy peaceful lazy afternoons on pretty days. Her twin swords are on the ground on either side of her, available for her to grab at a seconds notice. Upon hearing familiar footsteps, she opens one eye slowly. "Well, this is a surprise, matey. Thought ye avoided civilization."

Wildefray flops down next to Hale, but not before punching her friend’s shoulder. She shakes her paw and winces at the impact, though her friend doesn't seem to notice anything. "Ah, I usually do, ye see. But I missed your company on these lonely roads."

Hale guffaws, and sits up, leaning back on her paws. “Yer a swindlin’ liddle loosepaw rover, I hope ye know that.” She smiles broadly and envelopes her friend in a hug. “Tell me, what does bring ye here? An’ how’d ye know I was off duty?”

Wildefray tries to slip away from the hug and fails. She gasps. “I can’t breathe, ye lummox. Don’t kill me before I get t’ tell ye my story.”

The brawny guard releases Wildefray and leans back in her former position. “Do tell. Ye know I enjoy a good yarn, almost as much as I enjoy a good fight.” She looks at Wildefray expectantly.

Wildefray is in a playful mood. She lies down and closes her eyes, folding her arms behind her head. “I don’t know, Halestorm. Ye don’t seem t’ really want t’ know. And besides, it’s so nice out, and I’m tired. Don’t I get t’ take a liddle rest from my travel? All the way from the abbey, ye know. And with all those birds about...“

She doesn’t make it any farther in her taunting. Hale jumps on top of her, a sword in her hand, growling menacingly, her face an inch from her friend’s. “Tired, eh? Maybe I c’n liven it up for ye. Birdies are gonna seem like dibbuns when I’m done.”

Wildefray knows her friend well, but if it had been anyone else, she would have been hard put not to be scared. She laughs. “All right, all right, ye stuffed babbie toy. Get off and I’ll tell ye.” She doesn’t wait for her friend to get off, instead she hooks a paw and her rudder under and around Hale, flipping her over. “Ha, whose gonna wake up t’ th’ cold ‘ard truth, now, eh?”

Hale pushes Wildefray away effortlessly with one huge paw. She grins broadly. “Get on with et Wilde!”

‘Wilde’ sighs, looking at the sky. “Ye remember that liddle tyke I found, jus’ before ye took up this job ‘ere? Aye, her story tis a sad one, hard to ferget. Well, she’s at the abbey now, safe as she can be under the circumstances.”

Hale interrupts. “I know who ye mean, that liddle mouse Shandar. But why isn’t she with you? When you brought her here on yer way t’ Redwall, she almost looked ready to kill me when I suggested you go on and leave ‘er here for a bit!”

Wildefray hold up a paw for silence. “Aye, she and I were connected. I left her, Hale. She’s safe at the Abbey, but I didn’t say goodbye t’ her ‘cause she would’ve wanted t’ come with me.” She holds up a rolled piece of parchment. “I know you’re busy, and there are ravens about, but ye know your way around here.” She stops. “I’m loathe to ask ye t’ do this but—can ye possible bring a letter t’ her? Let her know I’m alright? And Camp Willow will have a connection t’ the abbey then, too.”

Hale heaves a sigh, suddenly wishing for the lazy afternoon that was no longer. She had known what was coming when her friend held up the paper. “Look, ye know there’s not much I wouldn’t do f’r ye, matey, but I’m not in charge o’ myself anymore. I’ve a job t’ do. I’ll ask the Skipper about it, but I can’t guarantee a yes. Also, why’re ye leaving now? I’ve never seen ye run when ther’re vermin t’ kill.”

Wildefray stands. “I’m not leavin’ leavin’. I’m just leavin’ the Abbey. Ye know I can’t stay in one place f’r long. But I’ll be fightin’ from the outside. Matter o’ fact, maybe helpful t’ the beasts inside o’ Redwall t’ have a fighter on the outside. Anyways...“ She yawns. “I’m tired. What I could use right now is a bucket o’ hotroot soup and a nap. Then I’d like t meet this new boss o’ yours. “

Hale stands and grabs her swords, slinging them across her back, in one fluid motion. “C’mon then Wilde, off t’ the kitchen. Then I’ll see if I c’n find Hallow.”
