Some bad news for the Guaire family

From Redwall MUCK Wiki

Some bad news comes to Derrin and his parents, along with a very unexpected plot twist.

It is a rather sad day at the Guaire household today, and inside, Derrin and his parents are sitting at the table rather quietly, only saying small sentences to each other, such as, "Nice day," but it was not a nice day, and the past few days hadn't been that great for them either after hearing of Rorgan's arrest.

There is a knock at the door. A familiar Gold furred cat is here on their porch. His news will be /sure/ to brighten their day. Thaddius knocks again, this time more forcefull.

After only a few moments, Derrin answers the door, opening it to reveal the interior of the house and the sad family it contained. "Oh, Thaddius..." He says softly. "Please, come in..." With that, he literally turns and leaves the door open to go sit at the table again with his parents, who now look a bit older than they should at the moment.

Thaddius Cringes when he sees them. He decides not to beat around the bush. "I'm sorry. I've got bad news for you. We lost the trial. Mayor Edwin has been aquitted of all charges and will soon regain his position of mayor." Better to let the bad news sink in before drops the next bombshell on them

Despite all expectations, this doesn't seem to faze the family in the slightest. "Somehow, I knew he was going to win..." says Galah sadly, gently gripping her husband's paw while staring straight at the table. Fiagai and Derrin, for their parts, try their best to look strong, but even they have no response for that.

"That's...that's not the worst of it either." The cat rubs the back of his neck as he speaks, "Now that he is back in power he will try to have your son and that other fox probibly executed or sent to the mines. There will be a trial but...we both know how that will turn out. He might also come after you all. Probibly even me. You...you should probibly leave town."

At this, Derrin suddenly stands from the table, knocking his chair backwards. There is a sudden fire in his eyes as he speaks. "No, we're not leavin'. I'm gettin' Rorgan outta Edwin's paws, an' then we're goin' t' kill that stars forsaken shrew." Galah stands as well, walking around the table and putting a paw on her son's shoulder. "Derrin.." She begins, but the otter shoots a look at his mother that is full of absolute hatred. "No, ma..Edwin is the reason Rorgan an' I never grew up wid ye, an' I'm goin' t' pay him back fer that."

The cat looks shocked by this outburst. His ears shoot up from the excitement and his tail poofs. "While I agree with you, the shrew needs to die, but it will be at the paws of the law, not vengence." He looks torn though. The justice system hasn't failed...it just made a serious mistake today. "And...its..." The cat sighs, "I don't know, maybe you should break him out...but...its, the place is guarded by the militia now, and seeing your history with Tavis, I would expect him to be marching down here the moment Edwin accuses your family for treason."

Derrin lets out an almost gutural snarl, his eyes seeming to blaze with a vengeance unlike anything he had felt before. "No, law had its chance t' succeed. Now, we do it my way. The first thing we need t' do is get my parents out o' here an' find refuge among the bush folk. Maybe we can convince them not t' kill me an' Rorgan, thinkin' we betrayed them."

The cat raises his eyebrows then narrows them at the otter. "If you are going to break him out, then I don't want to know about it. I still believe in the system, even after this, and its my sworn duty to..." There is another knock on the door. "Are you expecting company?" Thaddius asks.

Derrin's eyes narrow, and he shakes his head as he walks forward and places a paw on Thaddius's chest. "You may want t' keep yer distance here." With this, he reaches out and opens the door, not even quite bothering to hide the rage on his face.

"Hello Derrin." Says the mouse on the other side. Tavis is still dressed in his sling, with his long sword at his side. His chest is covered in a chain mail tunic. "Long time no see, mind if I come in for a moment. We have things to discuss."

Derrin's eyes are like small fireballs at this point, and he crosses his arms. "I actually do mind, thankee. Wotever ye want t' discuss, we can discuss right here at th' door." If a gaze could shoot daggers, Tavis would likely look like cottage cheese by this point.

The feeling is obviously mutual. "Fair enough. I have been ordered to arrest you, and your family for treason. And while we both know I would gladdly like to do so...I am..." he cringes. As if having a hard time saying the words, "I am going to come down here in ten minutes with my beasts to find you all gone with no trace to find you."

It takes Derrin what seems like several minutes to comprehend what was just said. "Y-Ye are.." He finally agrees, looking back at his parents, who nod and quickly begin gathering their things. Looking back at Tavis, Derrin looks slightly awkward now. "Uh, I know we have a bad history, but...I just want t' say thankee, an'..." He sighs. "It was a pleasure t' serve with ye while I did."
