Recovery Room

This comfortable but spartan room has several small alcoves lining the wall. Infirmary bunks with resting and recovering patients lie in these alcoves, each cordoned off with a gossamer drapery of linen for privacy. The room is lit with oil lamps and the pleasing warmth of a small hearth fire. This room is kept quiet, except for the occasional snore, hacking cough or sniffle of its sleeping infirmary occupants.

The late morning finds Mirabella sitting up in one of the many bunks, her gossamer curtain thrown back to let her see the aisle, and a book firmly grasped in her petite paws. The mousemaid's leg is splinted, but not casted, and a thin dressing runs under her bangs to conceal a nicely stitched cut on her forehead. Nevertheless, she seems in good spirits, her bright green eyes running quickly to and fro as she scans the lines of text.

Leon walks in as he checks on a couple other beasts. A mole with a broken toe and a dibbun who had skined her knee earlier in the day. He smiles and lets the dibbun vole go bac to the badger papa and sighs a little as he goes to check on some smal bags of herbs he was putting together ealier, about 15 looks like and is ready to place them in a pouch when he decides to check on Mirabella "Hello miss" He says and waits on a reply.

"Hello, Brother Leon," Mirabella chirps happily, smiling over the top of her book. "Thank you ever so much for checking on me, but I'm feeling much better; really, I do." She glances over towards the doorway, past the healer. "I think I rather ought to be getting back to my chores soon. I tend the candles in the library and I help with the washings and if I'm not there to help, then who will? They'll be overwhelmed and extra busy and it's all my fault." She blinks prettily in consternation.

Leon folds his arms over his chest "With an injuried leg you won't be much help and there are many who can still help out. And candles will still be ok for days, your leg will need to heal first."

"But..." Mirabella quibbles, trying to think of a good reason why the healer's argument is irrelevant and coming up with nothing. "I don't want to stay here anymore. I really love to be helpful and useful and I can't do that sitting in bed."

Leon shakes his head "Your leg is still swollen some and so you need to not be on it." He then thinks "You can still be helpful in other ways maybe till your leg is no longer swollen, maybe in a week or so?"

"A /week?!/" Mirabella's cry of shock rings out loudly, no doubt startling some of the other, more sedate patients. "Brother Healer, if you think there is /any/ way that I am going to be shut up for a whole week, then you must be out of your wizened head! What a dreadful thing to say!" She blinks rapidly, the book loose in her grasp and tilting forward. "I need to get out, and walk, and see the summer, and smell the flowers and the leaves and the fresh air!"

Leon takes a deep breath and then exhales, "Do calm down, you want to be able to walk on your leg with no pains right? There is crutches maybe or, well not sure if there is a wheelchair or not. We use to have one a young ferret used but not sure if it would be too big or not. And if you did use the wheelchair it would only be a week, maybe less."

"Crutches sound nice," the mousemaid replies, scooting herself up a little more in the bed. "At least I'd be able to walk around instead of laying here in this bed, wasting away into nothing." Mirabella nods to herself, thinking it over. "Yes, I would like crutches very much."

Leon smiles "I assure you, you wouldnt of wasted away, I know beasts who was in here over half a season, some are in here just a few days or maybe a day as depends on what is wrong with them"

Mirabella nods, smiling back. "So when can I get some crutches and get out of here?"

Leon looks to see if he can find any "Now your still need to take it easy, sit down and rest the leg and make sure it doesn;t swell up more. You also can not do too much standing up or walking too much with the crutches. If your leg would start feeling worse you would need to come back here."

"Oh of /course,/" Mirabella agrees enthusiastically, nodding her consent. "I would never do anything to endanger my own recovery, Brother Healer. I just want to be able to get around." Mostly. Yeah. "Do we have any here? Will you need to make them?"

Leon answers her "We should have some crutches here somewhere as we try to keep some of varies sizes around"

Zork enters the room slowly and looks around, upon seeing Leon and Mirabella he waves"Ello ta ya, I were just in ere' ta get something."

"Could you please find me some? It would be ever so nice to get out of this bed," Mirabella simpers, pawing at the coverlet. "I've been in here all day."

Leon glaces over at Zork and picks up some packs of herbs he had ealier and places them in a pack as he walks over "There is enough for the two weeks I will be away." He hands them to the badger and looks over at the mosemaid , "Just a moment" He walks over to a closet and smiles as he finds a cople pair of crutches and sits them by her "You can use the ones you think feels best." He makes sure to pay attention to both of them.

Zork takes the packs of herbs and nods, he glaces at Mirabella "Wot happen ta you lass?"

Leon starts to say something when he is intruppted by a novice and sighs, "Ok..where are they? Bunn on paw...ok..." He nods to them "I have to go check ona beast that burned thier paw" He then rushes off, the ever busy Master Healer.

"Thank you, Brother Healer," Mirabella responds with a bright smile. Looking up at Zork's question, she cheerfully responds. "I fell down a deep hole. It was terribly dark inside, but they rescued me a few hours later."

Zork blinks as Leon rushes off and leans back in his chair as he listens to Mirabella" Deep hole?" He asks "Sounds odd ta me, glad your ok lass." He sits the pack he has on his lap

"Oh yes, over by the wall next to the firepit," Mirabella answers, propping the book back up in her lap. "Right through the ground into a well or something. It was frightfully dark down there," she repeats.

Zork nods "I don't usually go over thar, usually I like de orchards or maybe the garden, tis quiet thar. I hope they fix it so no beast else falls into it"

Mirabella nods as she finds her place in her book again. "Yes, I'm sure they will. The kind beasts who pulled me out of there had several ideas for how best to take care of the problem and I'm quite certain that they'll solve it."

Zork nods to this "Well then its best to let them do that, I am sure all will be well. so how long do you have to stay in the infirm?"

"I'm getting out today!" Mirabella's voice rings out, bell-like, over the top of her book. "I've just got to pick one of these crutches and then I should be able to go and get on with my life. I have chores to do, after all."

Zork listens, he is in here chatting and leaning nack in his chair, "Well still be careful, Leon can be a bit, well, lets just say tis best ta listen to the lad. Maybe do eaier chores a few days."

Lacota enters the room rather suddenly. "Miss Mirabella, it is good to see you feeling better. That was quite a nasty tumble you took yesterday."

"Oh, hello, Brother Friar! It's good to see you." Mirabella beams across the top over her book at the squirrel, sat up in bed as she is. "I was just about to get out of here, actually. Brother Healer says that my leg is just looking ever so lovely and that all I need are these crutches."

Zork waves to Lacota and looks back at the mousemaid" Leon said that? Knowing him he probally dont want ya on the leg too much lass"

Lacota smiles, nodding his head. "Good to hear, Lass. I intend to talk to Benar about having that hole covered over somehow, so beasts won't fall in again."

Blithely ignoring Zork's comment, Mirabella nods, closing her book and gingerly swinging her bum leg over the side of the bed and collect her crutches. She stands, albeit with difficulty, and then immediately opts for the second pair of crutches. "Okay, yes... Yes, that's good."

Lacota steps forward. "Do you need any assistance, Miss?"

"Oh no, I couldn't impose," Mirabella mutters, looking down at her feet while she gets the crutches in position under her arms. "I'm certainly fine. Totally fine, that is. Completely." She gives a nervous laugh, then totters forward, her bum leg kicked out in front of her, still splinted. "See? Perfectly fine. What a lovely day it is! I should go outside."

Lacota hmms, crossing his arms. "You sure, Miss? Back when I lost my sight for awhile, I had to rely on others' help sometimes. Either way, some fresh air will do you good."

"I'm /fine,/ really," Mirabella insists, straightening up and wrinkling her nose with a sniff. She pauses to adjust the dressing on her head, moving it imperceptibly upward, then wraps her paws around the handles of the crutches. "Now! Let's see about going outside." The crutches lift and plop down in front of her, and she swings forward like the clapper of a bell, taking a long step before adjusting to turn into the walkway. She's headed for the back door.

Lacota follows close behind. "Allow me to get the door, at the very least." He slips around Mirabella, and quickly pushes the door open before she can protest. "Ladies forst, of course."

"Oh of course," Mirabella replies, practically bursting through the door on her crutches, dress swing around her legs as she moves. She tackles the stairs demurely, looking a little unstable, and ventures out into the Abbey Yard.
