Return to Arundal Part 3 Assault on Aurndal Jail

From Redwall MUCK Wiki

Continues directly from Return to Arundal part 2. Can Rorgan protect the prisoners from the lynch mob outside?

The young otter turns her head away from Rorgan, crossing her arms with a deep scowl set upon her face. No reply comes forth though inwardly she does want to make one. Instead the skinny grey furred fox in the cell across pushes Veriken out of the way, "Rorgan! Buddy! Long time no see. I don't supose you are here to let us out?" Veriken makes a yelp as he is tossed aside, while on the ground he rubs his sore head and shouts some insult in his native tongue before lunging at Vannon. The bandit keeps him at bay with his foot paw on his fore head, "Yeah...like, any time soon would be nice."

Despite this, Rorgan continues to ignore the two for the moment. He figures they can handle themselves just for a bit. "Elise, don't do this. I don't want t' leave you here, an' I promise you don't want t' be left here either. You can come with my family an' I an' start a new life in Mossflower, but I won't bring you unless you want t' come with us." His paws grip the bars pleadingly, guilt racking his insides as he watches the clearly upset female.

Elise narrows her eyes. She has quite a lot to say but really, doesn't know how. She turns back to Rorgan and opens her mouth to make a reply, maybe to scold him, maybe to forgive him, maybe both. What ever her answer may be is lost when the only guard returns. The young ferret looks a little paniced...more so than a moment ago. "Hey, have you found the prisoners you needed yet? Its...its getting pretty bad out there." She nervously glances at the front door from where she stands, keeping the cross bow ready to loose a deadly bolt at a moments notice. Inside the cell Vannon leaps up, letting veriken go crashing forward into the ground from sheer momentum. Vannon lands on the fox and declares, "I keep hearing them shouting to hang some fox...that's...that is not me right?"

The little ferret fishes into her belt and produces a set of keys, which she half handedly tosses in Rorgan's direction. She jumps when there is a loud BANG against the front door. "As far as I care you can take the deed to the place. Just what ever you are going to do, make it quick."

Rorgan nods quickly, waiting for the ferret to leave. "Alright, I'll try t' be as quick as possible. Just do wot you can fer the moment, alright?" He turns back to Elise's cell, and he stands, beginning to unlock the door.

The young otter gives Rorgan a shocked look. "Rorgan, what are you doing?" She hisses, looking nervously towards the door to see if the ferret comes back. The other beasts seem to be just as interested in the possibility of escaping. No one is ever excited about the prospect of being lynched. The lizards, who have yet to have a firm grasp of common beast language can only imagine what is going on outside. Edwin watches the otters with a currious yet calm look. Vannon and Veriken both stare at Rorgan, then each other and are both instantly at the cell door. "Hey Rorgan, buddy...remember that time I saved your life?" Vannon begins as Elise's door opens wide.

Rorgan sighs as he steps inside Elise's cell, leaving the door slightly open behind him. "I'm givin' you a chance t' get out of here, but you'll need t' trust me t' do it, an' I want you t' trust me. Please understand I didn't want you t' end up here at all, nor did I ever want t' kill yer dad, but he forced me t' do it."

Elise respons by looking away from Rorgan, rubbing her arm nervously she replies finely with, "I know. It's just...I know he did bad things, I know because I helped him. Burning down the warehouse doesn't even touch the extent of what he did." She looks up at him, her features hard to read, "He was still my dad though. And I had a lot to ask him about mom, about my brothers, and now I can't. She brushes past the otter, stepping out of the cell.

Rorgan turns and follows the otter out of the cell. "An' I understand, Elise. I completely understand moreso than I ever could've afore I met my parents. I couldn't imagine wot it would be like t' lose my dad, but all I'm askin' is that you don't hate me fer doin' it. I have no wish t' watch you die."

The grey fox in the other cell twitches an ear. "Die? Who said anything about dieing?" Veriken rolls his eyes, "They hang thieves here fox." Vannon looks paniced, "But...but I'm too young to hang! THere is so much left to do, so much left to steal, so much left to eat!" Elise ingores them. "What you want is not important Rorgan." She says coldly. She has mixed feelings for the otter, that is apparent. "But I don't blame you, I blame Henri for getting himself killed. I just hate the fact that you were the one to do it."

Rorgan looks pained, and he takes a hesitant step towards Elise. "Please, Elise...I've been feeling terrible about it ever since it happened. If I could go back, I would find a way t' take him down without killin' him, but the fact that I can't makes me feel worse." He sighs, looking at the ground. "I'm sorry Elise, I really am, but please don't walk out there on yer own. If you don't even want t' talk t' me, that's fine, but at least wait until I can get the you and the others out afore you go off on yer own."

The otter jumps at the sound of a loud crashing noise from the front office. "RORGAN!" The ferret shouts before the sound of cross bow launching its payload can be heard. By the sound of the scream that follows the arrow strikes true. "Sounds like I don't have a choice. Can we talk about this when we don't have a lynch mob bursting in the door?" Elise snaps back. Vannon is the first to panic. "THey are coming for me!" He grabs veriken and starts shaking him, "YOU can't let them take me!" Edwin in his own cell is begining to sweat. "D-don't worry...they can't break down the bars of the cell...can they?" Even the lizards are starting to look worried.

Spurred on by this sudden happening, Rorgan runs up behind Elise and hands her the keys. "Elise, I'm goin' t' trust you with these. Please get everybeast save Edwin out of here, an' make sure they're ready t' run, alright?" Without even waiting for an answer, he draws his bow and two arrows and races towards the open door and towards the sound of the crash.

The door to the sheriff's office has been knocked off it hinges. Several beasts are trying to spill into the room all at once, creating a congested mess at the front door. THree have successfully broken in. The ferret dashes under the sheriffs desk with a terrified squeek to get away from the hare chasing after her, he has an arrow lodged into his arm. A vole in suspenders carrying a club, followed by a mouse with a pitch fork push their way towards Rorgan. They pause, anger pushes them forward but fear of an armed beast standing before them keeps them from attacking, for the moment.

Rorgan decides it would be best to use this hesitation to his advantage, and he quickly begins to loose arrows at the three beasts as quickly as he can. Only having to draw a new arrow once because of having had two arrows at the ready really helps the otter with his speed, but he is not hasty with his shots either.

The three arrows bounch off the brick wall behind the beasts, but not before tearing their garments. The vole and mouse turn tail and attempt to flee as more beasts attempt to push their way in. The hare sees the air fly by his head and instead of doing the senseble thing and running for the hills he grabs the ferret by the tail, pulling her out from under the desk and holding her close. Leveling his hatchet at her throat the hare says in a terrified voice, "D-drop the bow! O-or she dies!" Lost in the din of the chaos around them the sound of unlocking doors can be heard.

The hare gulps at the sight he hesitates for a brief moment, deciding what to do. In that moment the ferret makes up his mind. She might just be the secretary but even she has her boiling point. The hare gasps as the ferret bites down on his paw, forcing him to drop his ax. Then the ferret drops him by spinning, aiming a well placed knee in places best left to the imagination. The hare drops to the ground, a look of surprise, shock and pain on his face.

Behind Rorgan an otter, two foxes, and two lizards appear. They waste no time and barrel head long into the crowd by the door, pushing through them and out. Blows are exchanged, claws tear at fur, and teeth bite at flesh as the beasts fight for dear life to escape.

Rorgan quickly rushes forward in the chaos and grips the ferret by the arm. "Come on!" He shouts quickly, pulling her in the direction that everybeast else is going to kickstart the ferret's reactions into making her run. "We have t' go now!" He shouts again before letting go of the ferret and racing through the small hole created by the other escapees even while shouting, "Edwin's in the cell!!" Rather loudly so the crowd can hopefully hear it as he goes.

The beasts might have more to worry about than their quarry at the moment. Main street is in complete Chaos. Beasts are fighting beasts in a large crowd outside the jail with out rhyme or reason. And then there is the militia. With Tavis at the lead there are perhaps twenty warriors, dressed in green cloaks with metal brass plates over chain main tunics. They each carry long deadly tipped spears. "Shield bearers to the front!" Behind the lancers several beasts dressed in chain mail maneuver to the front, holding only kite shields. "Aim to wound! Do not aim to kill. Forward....MARCH!" Tavis points with his drawn blade and the company of militia begin to move forward towards the crowd, pushing beasts away with their shields, or bashing them with the but end of their spears.

Both lizards try to keep up with the otters as much as they can, weaving into and out of the crowd. At least until Elise just vanishes. Veriken does much of the same. Seeing a way out of this mess he dodges between two fighting badgers and simply dissapears into the crowd. Vannon follows closely behind until he sees one of the lizards fall from a blow to the back of the head. His companion stops to help him. "Hey mate...I think one of your lizard pals just got knocked over!"

Behind them the militia draw closer and closer. They are having success in driving out the unruly mob.

The otter stops and turns, cursing under his breath as he notices Elise and Veriken both gone, though he hadn't exactly expected them to stick around very long. He dashes back, however, to help the lizard up with the assistance of his companion. "Come on!" He shouts, pushing trying to push them ahead. "We're almost t' the side street!"

And now in Tavis's line of sight. The mouse points his blade toward the otter and his party, "Get them! Get them now!" The militia beasts turn their attention away from the now fleeing mob and begin to rush forward towards Rorgan. Perhaps it is not best to tempt how far the 'don't aim to kill' order goes towards the militia's most wanted.

Rorgan's ear twitches as he runs and hears Tavis's voice. He turns his head, eyes widening when he notices the militia beasts all heading for him along with Tavis. "Guys....we need t' move it right now!" He continues to push the lizards lightly from behind. "Vannon!" He shouts. "Move it!!"
