Salamandastron: Niche

  • -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Salamandastron *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

You are next to a niche in the side of the mountain, which blocks out

everything to the west with its immense rocky bulk. Just barely visible

is a small fissure in the rock, through which it looks like you could

'enter' the mountain.

With:

[DYN] Silent hunter... (Morpheus)

[DYN] Miette

[DYN] Not just any hare, (Darklett)'s a Long Patrol Lieutenant!

Quinten pads out of the fissure from inside the mountain, shading his eyes with a paw as he looks around

Morpheus is somewhere nearby, laying on top of a dune and watching the hares silently.

Darklett is quieted by Miette's words, a little smirk forming. "Well, we can't just -wait,- Miette. Got other stuff to do, too, besides plop on our hind ends and wait for pirates."

Quinten spots Darklett and Miette and pads over towards them throwing a salute at them

Salamandastron: Sentry Room

  • -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Salamandastron *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Once one has ascended the stairs, they would come upon this room, the sentry room. Along one wall, thee are small, slitted windows, which look no more than cracks in the mountain wall, from the outside, and it looks down upon the niche, outside the mountain, where all creatures entering the mountain must pass. The room, sparse and basically un-furnished, while comfortable in the summer, is often quite cold in the winter, save for a small fireplace in one corner. During the winter, you had better believe that is kept alive most of the season long, by the sentries on duty who wish to remain unfrozen. There are always two hares on duty in this room, one to always remain and the other to sound the alarm to the rest of the mountain, if need be. Two chairs are situated beneath the slitted windows in the wall.

With:

[DYN] One eyed, Longpatrol Major, Jarril Black Fleetpaw.

[DYN] Not just any hare, (Darklett)'s a Long Patrol Lieutenant!

[IIC] Niveus

Moving along the beach outside of the mountain, Jarril is doing another one of his daily runs since he had taken himself off duty. Looking up to the mountain a fair bit away, he casually jogs at a gentle pace now, ducking and weaving all the time as well as turning back on his tracks here and there. Basically the major isn't doing the straight line, that would be stupid.

Niveus was jarred at the sudden entrance, giving a startled 'erk' as he sat up straight, ears flopping back into place as he whirled about. "Good evening, sah." he said, paw tossed up to plant a firm salute at his brow. "Jus' doing what I can, sah."

Darklett nods in return to the salute. "At ease. Just figured I could check up on the sentries, and... Well, good thing I did. One seems to be missing." He leans to the side, brows raising at an empty spot where a sentry should be.

Quinten there is the sound of running footpaws and then a pair of ears poke into view followed by the rest of Quinten, he sighs when he sees Darklett and comes to attention saluting, he'd been hoping to get here before anyone noticed he was late

Jarril comes to a stop behind a rock and leans on it, taking out his flask, he takes a sip of water and wipes his brow. Pausing for a moment, he looks out at the evening sky and smiles to himself, turning to face the sea for a moment. "Pah, why stay indoors when ya got this." Taking out a scone, he idly munches his last remaining food item, chewing slow and thoughtfully.

Niveus resumed ease with the acknowledgement, sidestepping so as to place his back to the wall and be able to glance between the officer and the viewpoint. "I say, I am not quite sure where the chap is off t', sah." His answer came with the entrance of Quinten. Allowing the lieutenant his words, the young soldier turned his attention back to the world abroad. He leaned in, squinting as he took heed of the apparently hare form running down the shoreline. Being nothing of concern, the private's attention was pulled back into the

Darklett's ears perk as he turns around to spot the late-in-coming Quinten. "Oh, then you must be the second hare on duty now?" A small frown curls on his lips, and he shakes his head. "You're late," Darklett points out to the hare, his arms moving behind his back, and one paw grasping the wrist of the other, and his ears swivel forward a bit, indicating a prompt for an explanation.

Quinten swallows and remains rigid in his salutes "Sah, ah appoligise sah but i had ta replace me tunic it was in tatters after paw to paw training sir" he swallows and looks up at the officer, that is not going to go down well either.

Jarril getting up from his position, the major carries on his journey back to the mountain, running, weaving in and out at his usual speed again. Only the colour of the sand is a way of keeping from being easily seen since all other obstacles are out of the way now.

Niveus averted his gaze from the pair, clearing his throat quietly as he returned to the task on hand. In the presence of the officer he remained rigid, paws clasped about his back as he gazed out toward the only interesting shape in view: the major's. "Someone's right enjoyin' their day," he murmured under his breath.

For a moment, the lieutenant looks around the room. "...Recruit, do you think anybeast here would be greatly offended if you had a few nicks in your uniform? It's sentry duty, not a beauty pageant." He looks disapprovingly at Quinten, his paws still behind his back. "You'll have to make this time up on sentry duty tomorrow."

Quinten scuffs a footpaw but remains at attention "Yes sir...as you say...though my uniform was in shred sir...not nicked..." he remains right where he is, "I'll make it up sir"

Now really close to the mountain now, Jarril slows up and looks to where the light is coming out from the sentry room and nods his head. Still wearing his backpack on his back he carefully makes his way into the cave of the mountain to head inside.

Niveus's paw found itself clamped over his muzzle, stifling soft laughter with the 'beauty pagent' mention. He quickly steeled himself, returning the paw to its place as he cleared his throat once more. As the major neared the young hare chided himself-- a superior officer was 'right enjoying their day.'

Quinten moves over to the window stiffly, back straight, he peers out of the viewpoint and sighs as he catches a glimpse of Major Jarril before he enters the mountain, please don't let him come up here

Darklett's brow raises considerably as the recruit contradicts him. He clearly wasn't expecting that. "And after you're done with the duty, you may as well make the place so clean it glows, recruit." His lips curl in a deeper frown. Tsk, so disappointed in him!

Sound of someone coming up towards the sentry room can be heard outside....

Niveus's muzzle clamped tightly together, staring straight ahead as the wrath of the officer poured down upon the unfortunate recruit-- he certainly didn't want any!

Quinten sighs and lowers his head nodding to Darklett "Yes Sir i will sir make it clean sir, i will make it shine sir" he tries not to sigh at that punishment, its not as bad as it could have been.

Darklett nods to the recruit, eyes creasing downward as he shakes his head. "Now that we're all here..." Pause. "I see you are doin' just fine, no complaints, right? Good." And he turns his head as the steps coming into the sentry room get louder as somebeast approaches.

The head of Jarril comes around as he comes in. "'vening." Moving into the room as he takes off his pack from his back and places it on the floor. "Well, that was a fun few days out in the wild. So anything being going on while I was away?"

"Tough luck, mate." Niveus leaned toward Quinten, murmuring quietly. The entrance of Jarril grabbed his attention, the young hare turning on heel to once again offer a firm salute.

Quinten grimaces at Niveus' words then turns smoothly and salutes Jarril, shoulders drooping somewhat at the appearance of the Major, its only a short step to Darklett reporting on him to his benig pulled up short and sentanced to something very unpleasent.

Darklett salutes the major as he comes into the sentry room. "Major Jarril," he greets the officer, holding his paw firmly to his forehead. "Welcome back, sah!" The lieutenant eyes

Quinten, but keeps his mouth shut about that. So far, anyway.

Jarril nods his head as he leans against the wall, looking at Quinten for a moment. "Is there something wrong, lad?" Moving his gaze to the other two then back at Quinten again.

Niveus latched either paw in place behind his back after the recognition, remaining poised in the posture for a prolonged moment before returning to keeping a watchful eye on the shore.

Quinten folds his paws behind his back and lets his ears droop low "I reported late Major, the lt. caught me sah" going for the truth it seems, especially with Darklett still stood there.

Darklett turns his head towards the Major again, nodding in confirmation of what the recruit said. By now, his paws had dropped to behind his back. "I've already reprimanded and punished him, sah. He's making up the time on sentry duty tomorrow, and after he's done, cleaning and dusting the entire room."

Jarril looks about the room and nods. "Hmmm, yes the room does need a clear out." Turning to face Quinten. "But ya not ta get in the way of the next lot sentries on duty." Turning to face Darklett he shakes his head. "Been up and down the whole coastal area. Few vermin about though the most I saw at once is just three. No signs of a horde anywheres." Smiling. "Had a bit of bother with the squirrel gang up by that copse further inland but nothing ta serious. All is well at the moment. No one's seen a ship come past either. Looks like the slavers and pirates are keeping clear of this whole area."

Niveus, regardless of such tales of good fortune, peered endlessly out into the darkening shoreline within his rigid posture. He did his best to appear attentive, head turning side to side as if panning the area.

Quinten nods to the Major and turns to look out the window, glad that Jarril is not adding to his punishment though what the major will say when he finds out about his other tunic is anothe rmatter"

Darklett nods. "Glad for the good news, sah." Though, he almost snickers at the sound of the phrase 'squirrel gang.' "Hopefully it's like this for a long time, but I'm afraid that might mean they're just invading other areas where we aren't doing anything about it, sah."

Jarril shrugs. "Well, they could be hiding somewhere but not seen a single bloodthirster about, that's not ta say that they ain't around. But I have a feeling there leader may have to go back and report to someone else." Pausing on Darklett words, he replies back.

"I think we need ta rebuild our numbers before we go off and sort out any other problems. Besides if anyone needed help they send for us. For the moment I think its best ta take care of our own business. It's not like we can keep fighting a war over and over, we end up being wiped out eventually, wot."

Niveus sneezed abruptly, ears flopping forward as he stifled the second in the brief series with a paw. He grimaced, quickly composing himself with a soft 'excuse me.' The young hare didn't know the major, but he'd certainly gained a liking to his wise words.

Quinten looks at Niveus and nods "Bless you" he then turns back to look out at the beach, ears cocked back wards listening to the Major's report, always best to try and keep abreast of things

"I understand that, sah." Darklett nods in agreement, Niveus's sneezing catching his attention briefly, as well as Quinten's words, but he goes back to the major. "However... Permission to speak my mind, sah?"

Jarril quirks an ear slightly as he nods at Darklett. "By all means, ya know I'll always listen ta what ya have ta say, Lt."

Darklett continues. "Whether we're fighting the enemy or not, I think it would at least be good for the patrol to keep track of what vermin are where... So, in the case that we are given a job we can handle, we can act quickly."

"Thanks, chap." Niveus whispered back, righting his posture after leaning sideways to offer the words.

Quinten smiles sideways at Niveus then leans forwards, peering out the window at the beech, he's spotted something but it looks like it is just a bird.

Jarril nods his head. "That's for the runnah patrols ta keep track off from now on. We're back on normal patrol duty of the coastal areas. If anything is happening, our friends will inform us. Word gets about. As for farther afield. Well, if a message has ta be sent ta say, Redwall or such then that patrol will find out more from there but that kind of intelligence takes time. But as for sending scores of hares about, not going to happen. Is that clear, Lt.?"

Darklett responds quickly. "Perfectly, sah." The lieutenant sharply nods, face straight. "Speaking of patrols, sah, I was wondering if I could come with yours the next time you headed out. Having a healer as my patrol's officer has its setbacks, no offense intended to Major Rahier."

Niveus did his tedious job, acting attentive and paying no visible mind to the words exchanged between the two officers. No doubt he heard, however he certainly wasn't about to turn around and comment!

Quinten is following the other sentries example, ignoring the officers as best as he can and concentrating on the beach ahead of us.

Jarril ponders. "If he signs a form ta say that ya can go, then I will allow ya on the next patrol. Should be in a few days time, as soon as the other patrol gets back." Moving back to his pack again, he picks it up again. "I'll have ta see on who else is good enough ta go on the patrol as well." Grinning slightly he shoulders the pack again and comments. "High standards and whatnot, wot. Anyways, I am going ta head off and rest now. Don't keep those two from their duties ta long as well."

Darklett nods to the Major. "Thankya, sah. Look forward to it." He tosses up a smart salute as Jarril moves to leave. "Won't keep 'em at all. Evening, Major!" The lieutenant holds his salute, and looks intent on holding it until the officer leaves.

Niveus played the part of politeness, turning about before clapping his footpaws together. "Good evenin', sah." he said, paw pressed to his brow.

Quinten follows suit turning to Salute the Major barking out a sharp "Sah" tiny hare standing politly to attention

Jarril nods and slowly leaves the room again, making more room in the sentry room once more since it's made for only two hares. Wiping himself, he smiles, muttering to himself. "Well, at least it be warm without a fire in there for a bit." Without saying another word, the major's paw steps grow fainter with each step.

Darklett turns to the recruit and private. "Anything to report yet?" the lieutenant asks the other two hares, head tilted to look sideways through the window slit.

"No, sah." Niveus flicked a glance back toward the shoreline to affirm the statement, head shaking thereafter. "Nothin' out of the ordinary, sah."

Quinten turns back to looking out the window at the beech

Darklett nods. "Good, good. In that case, I'll make sure the next shift isn't late." He doesn't even put emphasis on that last word. "Keep a sharp eye out, no napping." And at that, he sidesteps towards the stairs.

"Without a doubt, sah." Niveus chuckled quietly, turning back toward the viewpoint as the lieutenant made his way out. He resumed the leisurely posture as before, head planted between both paws as he propped his elbows against the window. "I say, ol' chap, I'll help you with the whole cleaning and shinin' lot."

Quinten turns his head and smiles, ears flopping as he shakes his head "No that is ok...it's my own fault, i'm just glad the Major didn't ask why i was late if he finds out i ruined another tunic he'll have my hide"

Niveus grinned from ear to ear at the mention, chuckling softly. "I'd be more worried about the company's tailor catching up with you, having to mend your tunic and wot not."

Quinten shivers and grips the window ledge and peers out "They are a rather annoying bunch always going out about me growing up" he flicks his ears, they only reach up to your shoulders "And i'm a tiny hare"

Niveus ruffled the recruit's headfur with a chuckle. "Steady on, ol' chap. You've got seasons yet to grow." With that, he gave a polite nod.

Quinten flicks his ears and mock glares at you trying to duplicate the Major's unhappy frown when he does something wrong, he flicks his ears again and peers out the window"
