Healing Lesson

From Redwall MUCK Wiki

RW Abbey: Library

The library is disturbingly empty of books and scrolls, and only a small fraction of the knowledge it should be able to hold is actually present and available for perusing. The beautifully crafted windows are well cleaned. Giving the library plenty of light during the daylight hours. This, combined with the room's high vaulted ceiling, causes a rather foreboding play of shadows in the corners and between shelves. The flagstones of the floor are cool and smooth, and echoes of clicks and thumps can be heard quite clearly when beasts walk among the mostly bare shelves. Brass lamps containing short, fat little white candles provide enough light for reading.

The world outside the high windows is dark. Flickering candles keep the library lit, and throw odd shadows on the walls.

Abbey Charter

Leon walks into the library and sits down his papers and a book, all things needed for a lesson.

Cera looks up and smiles, "H..H..Hello brother..L..L..Leon."

Leon offers a smile, “Well may be late but a promised lesson of healing is always good, basic lesson at first for today and see how much you learn over time"

Cera nods "U..U..Understood sir"

Leon nods, "Alright, you can tell one herb from another by how it looks, feels, even by smell, they grow along rivers and streams and in woods and by the road even."

Cera nods "Ok...s..s..sounds neat"

Leon opens up the book he has, it’s a basic herb book with pictures, “You can look through this and if you need help, you can find me or another abbey beast"

Cera looks at the pictures and big words, she sounds a couple out"W..W..W..will..bark...willowbark,..Fever..few.....feverfew..." She smiles and looks up, "Will I learn..b..bandaging too?"

Leon nods “Yes you will, it may take a while but as long as you pay attention and work hard your learn healing arts, even just the basics can save a life"

Cera sighs, "S..S..Seems hard, so m..much too l..learn"

Leon smiles, "Your do fine Cera, no one learns anything overnight or in one day"

Cera nods "A..Alright"

Leon stands “Let’s go to the meadow, we will be back soon as it’s a bit crowed ad loud, beasts readying for the feast”

Cera nods and gathers her things and follows him.

Meadow

You are standing in the midst of a plain of rolling meadow grass. This seems to be the very center of the meadow, and every way you look you can see meadow, waving in the wind. To the North, beyond all of the grass, stands the Abbey, not being able to hide its splendor it seems, no matter how far you travel from it. The Red sandstone building stands tall and proud, and you can still catch a scent of Abbey Food on the wind.

To the South there is a small rise in the ground, but over the hill you can see the steeple of a chapel, undoubtably the Church of St. Ninian. To the East is the Forest of Mossflower, endless trees going off in both directions. And to the West, past the grass you can the hint of dust rising in the air, signifying the presence of the Dirt Road.

Cera sits down and waits for the lesson.

Leon smiles and nods “Well we can go over a couple, let’s say..3 or 4?”

Cera nods “Alright s..sir, and maybe how to bandage or..s..something too?”

Leon nods, “Sure, let’s see its important to hold pressure on a wound as it slows bleeding and also to keep the one needing help calm as some are scared or don’t know how bad they are hurt sometimes, also clean the wound best you can as helps to prevent germs that lead to infection and swelling and no beast wants that.”

Cera shakes her head, ”..Nope..t..they don’t. so..w…what herbs today?”

Leon mentions an herb “Balm grows wild in fields and gardens and along dirt road . It has an upright stem that grows as high as 3 feet. And has light green-toothed ovate leaves grow in opposite pairs at each joint. The flowers may range in color from pale yellow to rose colored or blue white. It is excellent in treating colds attended with fever, as it promotes perspiration. “

Cera listens carefully and tries to take some notes. ”W..What bout..w..w..willowbark and feverfew?”

Leon ahhhs, ”Both help treat fevers..Willowbark a rough grayish bark, the twigs being brittle at the base; the leaves are slightly…like traces of fur like feeling , it flowers in April and May and the bark is easily separable throughout the summer. The bark and leaves are very effective to break and bring down minor fevers and colic and helpful in treating diarrhea and dysentery, and headache. Feverfew, small, daisy-like heads of yellow flowers with outer white rays. The stem is finely furrowed and hairy, about 2 feet high; the leaves alternate, downy with short hairs, or nearly smooth-about 4 1/2 inches long and 2 inches broad and used for Migraine headaches and can be used to bring down a fever as well.”

Cera smiles as she listens to the lesson and keeps a mental note, she is good at remembering things.

Leon nods “One last one today, this one is known for saw-toothed leaves, its Dandelion, rich source of vitamins and minerals, so it’s a food too. The leaves are used in salads and teas, while the roots are often used as a coffee substitute. Used as a sort of blood purifier and can treat joint problems and to treat poor digestion. “

Cera nods, she takes down a couple notes and remembers it in her mind.

Leon repeats a couple main points of the lesson and lets her remember and write it down as he waits.

Cera does so and double checks the notes and repeats things in her mind.

Leon smiles, “One more thing, going to show you how to take a pulse, “Here…” He lays tree fingers on her neck, “And here and here” Her right wrist and left wrist has three fingers, “You can also listen with an ear to their chest, also to see if breathing watch chest rise and fall and wet finger and place ear mouth, the air will be felt as a little warm or cold on the finger, also a mirror or like flat of a blade by the mouth, a small fog will appear on it, to show a beast lives, may take a moment but only a very short moment.”

Cera nods, “Alright, I will remember..t…thanks Mr. L..Leon”

Leon says, " Good. So back to the abbey then?”

Cera nods and gets her small pack and places her notes and book in it and follows the healer back to the abbey.

Leon makes sure she is indeed following and heads back to the abbey.
