Garth the Scholar

Title: INSOLENT, IGNORANT FOOL
Sex: Male
Occupation: Scholar
Organization: Redwall Order
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Garth the Scholar was an otter who came to Redwall during the Winter of the Plague (January 2009) and acted as a temporary recorder.

History

In the Winter of the Plague, the 27th season after the Great Earthquake and Father Josiah's last season as abbot of Redwall Abbey, an otter known as Garth the Scholar came to the Abbey of Redwall in the month of January. He was appointed temporary recorder while the actual recorder, a brother Harper Sutten, was ill. After completing three entries Garth seems to have never written again: what happened to him remains a mystery.

Last appearance & possible death

He appears in two logs, the first of which is during his time at Redwall wherein he manages to annoy and belittle every beast he meets, the second being his last recorded appearance on the MUCK. In this, he witnesses the aftermath of "Long Patrol Justice" - the summery execution of a fox believed to have been involved with the kidnapping of a leveret - and the outright murder of the fox's pregnant mate by the future Long Patrol Major Darcy. After this chilling experience, all records of Garth cease to exist nor was the otter ever mentioned again beyond what he wrote. Some have proposed the theory that, being a witness to a horrific act, he was later silenced by Darcy and the Long Patrol at large to keep their reputation up; this is arguably supported by the fact that the only other witness and Darcy's subordinate, private Brenden Thatcher, objected to the future major's actions and brought the incident up to the at the time commanding officer - who, in no uncertain terms, told Brenden to not mention the incident again with the implication of removal from duty and/or imprisonment if he pressed the issue further. Brenden seems to have later washed out of the Long Patrol, while Darcy was promoted to the rank of Major.

Was Garth silenced?

It is true that if he disappeared, not a single beast would ask after his whereabouts: he was ill liked by most everyone, and it seems many were more than glad to be rid of him. Yet his true fate may forever remain unknown.

Personality

In the few times Garth was active, he proved to be an all around unlikable and callous individual who constantly belittled and mocked those around him. However, he did posses some sense of right and wrong, as, when coming across the aftermath of a fox's murder, he attempted to stand up to the perpetrators until he was scared off.
