Finding Yourself

From Redwall MUCK Wiki

Characters: Kain, Nicodemus

Location: Great Hall - (Redwall Abbey)

Nicodemus walks into the Hall and nods to the tapestry, before dropping himself into a chair by the hearth.

Kain steps in from the kitchen and stretches. He looks around and spots his favorite chair, then goes to it and walks around it three times before setting down in it. He spots the Abbot and waves. "Hello."

Nicodemus nods. "Merry meet, Kain. You sure that chair is suitable?"

Kain smiles and nods his head. "Uh huh, squeearf! It's just perfect!" He smiles and rocks back and forth in it. "How are you?"

Nicodemus says, "Better than I deserve."

Nicodemus pulls his footpaws up onto the chair and leans back.

Kain smiles and tilts his head, "Better than you deserve? Don't you deserve the best, squeearf?"

Nicodemus laughs! "The best? I don't think so. When I was retired, I was pretty close to that though.

Kain chuckles a little and smiles, "Heh, oh! I see!." He thinks a momment and smiles! "Ohhh!! Your old! Aren't you!?!" He smiles and nods his head, "Very wise too, squeearf?"

Nicodemus says, "I know at least half of your statement is certainly true."

Kain blinks, then nods his head. "Oh, it must be the wise part, right? Hehe, you don't look too old to me. I... think your maybe.. uh... I think aged is the word?" He smiles and nods his head, "Yes! Your not old, your aged! Squeearf!"

Nicodemus smiles. "Aged like fine old wine, from the brim to the dregs."

Kain smiles a little, then tilts his head. "Oh? Wine? I heard of it, but... haven't had much of it I don't think." He smiles a little, "Is wine good when it's old?"

Nicodemus says, "Too old and it's vinegar. Then it's good for cleaning, but not drinking."

Nicodemus says, "Too young, and it's grape juice."

Kain nods, "Ah! I see. Then if you were wine, you would taste good, right?" He chuckles a little and smiles. "I.. I guess I would be grape juice, squeearf!" He chuckles a little more and smiles.

Nicodemus grins. "I wouldn't presume to know what sort of drink you'd be."

Kain smiles and nods his head, then he looks around, rocking in the chair more. "Sooo... What's it like, being the Abbot? I bet it's no fun, squearf."

Nicodemus says, "You win."

Nicodemus ponders that flippant response.

Nicodemus says, "That's not totally true."

Kain smiles a little. "Oh? It isn't? Hehe, I thought it meant you had a lot of things to do. I'm never good with doing a lot of things." He makes a somewhat embarassed look on his face and chuckles more.

Nicodemus hms. "There's many aspects of being Abbot that are wonderful. But, not the ones most beasts think about."

Kain nods his head a little. He then inquires further. "Ohh, I see. Squeearf... Like what? Hehe, I mean, I don't seem to think about much I'm told so..."

Nicodemus laughs.

Nicodemus says, "Well, I like bringing in new apprentices, er, novices. And seeing them develop into Brothers and Sisters."

Kain nods his head and smiles. "Oh, I see!" He thinks a momement and grins. "Hehe, can I be a novice? I mean, if it makes you happy." He smiles and grins widely.

Nicodemus says, "Making me happy needn't be your goal, lad."

Kain smiles, "I don't have much of a goal anyways. I guess if I did have one, it would be to make folks happy so, squeearf! It's a good enough goal for me!"

Nicodemus says, "Making beasts happy seems like a far better goal than many others I've come across."

Kain smiles brightly, a soft blush comming to his face. "Realy? It does? Hehe, I.. I've always thought other beasts have had so much better goals! I mean.. some of them are going to be heros I think, squeearf!"

Nicodemus hms. "When someone does great things, they are called a hero. To seek to be a hero seems rather strange to me. Most beasts I know who would be called heros tend to claim they aren't heroic."

Nicodemus says, "Of course, those who want to be called heros typically claim long and loud that they are."

Nicodemus says, "On the other hand, seeking to make others happy ... that's something everybeast can do but few bother with."

Kain blushes a little and falls silent for a moment. He then smiles softly and squeeks, "Hehe, what if I thought you were a hero?"

Nicodemus smiles. "Then I'd point out that I don't feel like a hero or heroic."

Kain smiles softly, "Hehe, well I bet you wouldn't!! I mean, just thinking about all the hard work you have to do makes me tired! Hehe, why, even thinking makes me tired!"

Nicodemus says, "Thinking makes most beasts tired. That's why there's so little of it on display."

Kain blinks, "What? You... you mean thinking makes beasts tired? Why... I didn't know that! I thought they always said I couldn't think or that I couldn't think that much cause it would hurt my brain but... you mean they even get tired from thinking?"

Nicodemus shrugs, "If it's not getting tired, it must be painful. I see too little thinking to believe that most enjoy it or find it easy or pleasant."

Nicodemus puts up his other paw, "On the other paw, I see lots of beasts who worry when thinking would resolve that."

Kain nods his head a little and smiles. "Oh! I see. Hrmm.. maybe uh... we should smile more. Yes!" He chuckles and squeeks. "I don't need to thinkt to smile, and nothings wrong with a smile." He squeeks again and smiles widely.

Nicodemus smiles back. "Indeed."

Kain smiles and squeeks, "Hrmm.. you were young once, right? Hehe, what made you smile?"

Nicodemus says, "The same things that make any young beast smile. Look in the pond and the beast you see will know them all well."

Kain nodnods, then gets out of his chair. "Ooho... is that beast still in the pond? Can he breath under water? Wow... He must be realy old to be THAT wise.." He smiles softly.

Nicodemus nods. "On a bright day, with a still pond, you'll see him pretty regularly."

Kain smiles, bouncing excitedly. "Oh!! Why, today is a pretty bright day I think! Do you think he's in there now?!?"

Nicodemus looks up at the stained glass.

Nicodemus says, "Probably. Of course, you can also see him in mirrors if there's even the barest hint of light."

Kain smiles! "Wow!! Uh.. is.. is there a mirror in here somewhere!?!" He looks around and smiles. "I can't wait to meet this beast! He.. he must be magical!"

Nicodemus leans back. "Well, he's able to do everything you do as fast as you do it. But, he's very quiet."

Kain nods his head. "Oh, I see... He sounds like he is very shy, and tallented!" He squeeks and squeeks and squeeks, looking around the room for something reflective.

Nicodemus nods. "I suppose he could be those things."

Kain finaly finds a glass that was left out. He smiles and holds it up. "Ooh, will this work? I think it's kind of like a mirror." He looks at it and smiles widely.

Nicodemus says, "Sa. It might work. Depends. No doubt if it doesn't you'll find something else that will."

Nicodemus raises to his footpaws.

Nicodemus says, "And while you quest for mirrors, I need to return to work."

Nicodemus stretches, joints popping audibly. "The part of the job that most beasts seem to skip right over."

Kain nods his head, then looks very closely at the glass, then glances back up at the abbot. "Oh, I see.. Thank you! I'll tell you what he says! Please, take care! Squeearf!"

Nicodemus says, "Merry part."
