Dethwort brew (A Redwall log)

From Redwall MUCK Wiki

Redwall Abbey Infirmary

Nightbreath the ermine. Angela the mouse and Riana the (dozing) eagle.

Nightbreath strides into the Infirmary, looking for Angela. He hasn't had a chance to talk to her yet.

The Infirm smells like a pile of leaves are well into the process of rotting and have been mixed with a swamp. Angela doesn't seem to notice as she rolls bandages by the corner where Riana is sleeping. The old mouse looks up at the ermine and puts a finger to her lips to let him know he needs to talk in whispers.

The Seer nods solemnly and moves to Angela's side quietly. He wrinkles his nose slightly. "I've been meaning to talk to you. About a certain beast named Marek."

Angela scowls, then stands and goes to guide him over to the counter, where of course the smell is a lot stronger. "Oh, that stoat. What's 'e gotten 'imself into this time? If ye're askin' me to come 'elp 'im, well, I ain't comin'! With Leon gone, I'm temporary Master 'Ealer, and I just don't trust that no-good rotten conqueror."

"No, I just needed advice on something," Nightbreath soothes. "Besides, Blisa believes he's been touched by Martin...Anyhow, he lost his memory due to a head injury, and I wanted to know if a Dethwort brew would work to restore it."

Angela scowls at the mention of what Blisa said, but then smiles nostalgically. "Ah, yes, Dethwort. Nasty place it grows, almost got eaten by toads the last time I 'arvested it. Used the last of what I 'ad to in a poison when I escaped from my 'owners'." she shudders. "If ye ever get caught by a beast who wnats to keep ye as a slave, do yerself a favour and commit suicide. 'Tis a fate worse than death." Tapping her chin, she thinks, then shrugs. "I've 'eard of a small group of Seers usin' it to restore memory, with some positive results, but I've never been able to try it for myself."

Nightbreath nods. "My mentor was one of those Seers. He never passed on the exact recipe, so the time I used it to restore Scioto's memory it was a bit touch-and-go. I had to piece together a few old texts to figure it out." He nods to himself. "Any other treatment I should use with it?"

Angela looks at him curiously. "Oh, really? Wonder if I ever met 'im? Other remedies, lemme think..." She leans on the counter. "Hmm.....be gentle about it, and don't rush them. If the Dethwort doesn't work, then don't worry. He'll /probably/ remember almost everythin' eventually. It might 'elp for 'im to to talk about stuff to a beast 'e trusts, like my great-granddaughter LilyMoore. From what I've 'eard, they're good friends."

"Very well. It'll take her mind off her mother having left as well," Nightbreath says. "Excellent."

Angela nods. "But I would ask that you take my grandson, Emyuil, and maybe even Caleb, her twin, with you. So Emyuil won't worry and Caleb can 'ave a bit of fun with 'is sister." The eagle stirs and the old Healer sighs. "You'd best go afore she wakes up entirely. Come find me if ye need any more 'elp with somethin', okay?" She gives him a smile, then walks over to her huge patient.

"Very well, thankee for your time," Nightbreath says, dipping his head respectfully and drifting out of the room. He has Seer's work to do.
