RW Abbey: Kitchen

This is a long, narrow room with five large fireplaces set into one wall, and two equally large wood burning iron stoves set against the opposite wall. Several small, rectangular tables rest in here, but there are no chairs available. The rest of the wallspace is taken up by an entire array of shelves, cupboards, and counters which hold the day-to-day cooking supplies and utensils. The kitchen is clean and well maintained, and more recent efforts have been made toward organization of the cooking ware.

On the wall just right of the door leading into Great Hall is a neatly penned chart, which lists the names of beasts assigned to cooking duty as well as the dates and times they are scheduled. A small note above the chart urges residents to volunteer for at least a slot or two a week.

Outside, the last rays of sunlight are fading. The ovens are being allowed to cool.

                       Exits/Entrances:
          [G]reat [H]all [Wine] Cellar [Sc]ullery
          [C]avern [H]ole [Pan]try [La]rder
          [Ki]tchen [P]ath

Lorimis is standing in the kitchen looking around as if waiting for something to arrive. One foot paw is tap tap tapping on the ground as he watches the Novices and Order members cook.

Caleb is helping today, well with chopping veggies and placing them in a pan. He sighs as he tried to make scones, least it was only a dozen as he was making then for the first time and the burnt and the otter dibbun Pip whom is a season older then Caleb didn’t help as he just laughed but luckily he was told to leave the room for a while by one of the order sisters.

Lorimis spots Caleb and as he is still waiting walks over to the young mouse "Caleb good morning to you, how are you enjoying your time in the kitchens? Benar tells me you are hoping to become a cook?"

Caleb smiles as he sees Lorimis and nods "Yes sir, once I become of novice age I am hoping for more time in here. I am good at making oatmeal with fruit and nuts and I can make good veggie soup also, but so far I am not good at making scones or rolls" He frowns at this "I failed both times."

Flicktail pokes his head in looking for food; he is a fox on the hunt

Lorimis chuckles softly, "Well if it makes you feel better the first time I tried to make ale I flooded the basement." He smiles softly, "Spring water everywhere. Though you must be coming up on five seasons soon no? Maybe at the feast you'll be ready to become a Novice. The Friar tells me it will be an amazing one."

Caleb smiles "I am 5 seasons now sir. I have paid attention in Papa Oz classes and been in a couple classes with Sister Zinnia lately and she is nice, and she is ok with me helping in here, even if it is a lot sometimes. I learn a lot from the cooks in here and hope to learn a lot more on cooking and help Friar Lacota cook too. Maybe help him make a simple dish for the feast coming up even"

Lorimis hasn't seen Flicktail, his back is too the door in case you are wondering Flicky! The abbot nods to Caleb and smiles, "Well just because we have a wedding at the feast doesn’t mean we will not have time to induct new brothers. If you think you will be ready and have learnt the charter then I will be happy to let you join."

Flicktail's ears perk, and he looks around, seeing Lorimis and Caleb, the fox begin working his way toward some cooling pastures, licking his chops as his paw sllloooowwwwllly reaches for a Pastry

Caleb smiles "Well as a novice sir and I have been studying the charter and..." Yep Flicktail is spotted by the young mouse as he frowns, "I don't think Friar Lacota would like it if one of his pies or a piece is missing sir Flicktail"

Lorimis turns his head and looks at the fox, "Flicktail, you know the rules. Thievery is not accepted. If you steal food I will put you back to washing dishes my Champion. As Caleb says those pies have not been given out by the Friar yet so taking one would be stealing."

Flicktail whimpers "Stealing is such a...STRONG word...maybe only..Borrowing...after all how do you expect a beast to resist something what smells so good and is still WARM? I mean there MUSt be something round ere for a poor hungry starving champion?”

Caleb looks at Flicktail, "Well it will probably be lunch soon, I know the friar also doesn't like beasts having snacks very often, maybe if they like ask ahead of time maybe "

Lorimis shakes his head, "Are you going to bake a replacement pie Flicktail? Are you mayhaps going to return it after taking it? If not then it is theft pure and simple." He shakes his head and places a paw on Caleb's shoulder, "You can come away from there and join us until lunch. I was just listening to Caleb, he wishes to join the order at my Spring Feast"

Flicktail says, "I'd like to bake a replacement pie...but you DO have to admit, Sneaking do make it taste better..even still um..may I have a pastry? just one?"

Caleb frowns, well he can't say yes or no as he isn't in charge of the kitchens, he does say one thing not about pies "Yeah I am gonna be a novice and learn more on cooking and baking and things like that and I almost know the abbot charter by heart just got to study it more and remember all of it"

Lorimis says, "You cannot have a pastry Flicktail you will have to wait like everyone else." He smiles and shakes his head, "I have faith you can impress me Caleb."

Caleb smiles "I will try my best sir"

Lorimis exclaims, "I have every faith in you Caleb, every faith! Ah there is Sister Neminara I will be right back"

Flicktail decides to leave, without a pie.

Caleb has been helping in the kitchens, and had a small chat with the abbot before going to finish placing some veggies in a pan while the abbot talks to a Sister in the order. Caleb has gotten good at making soups it seems as that’s what he helps with today.

Lorimis returns from his conversation with Sister Neminara and begins to make his way across the kitchen toward the door leading outside.

Caleb glances over at Lorimis when he sees the abbot starting to leave.

Lacota enters through that very door, carrying a basket full of herbs and spices. Nodding his head, he says, "Good afternoon, Abbot Lorimis, and young master Caleb." He sets his basket on a table, then watches the younger mouse. "You're doing a fine job. Tell me, lad, has your sister been in here peeling potatoes? I have not lifted her punishment for trashing my kitchen yet."

Lorimis stops mid-way when he hears Lacota and smiles, "Ah Lacota my friend good afternoon," He walks over and frowns, "I think I need to have a another long chat with the young lady soon. I had such hopes after our last talk and then she did that."

Caleb shakes his head "I didn't see her today and I think she sneaked out one other day."

Zork enters the kitchens from way of the Great Hall and ventured into her carefully when he hears voices.

Lacota frowns, shaking his head. "When I find that lass, she's going to learn just what a strict disciplinarian I can be." He then nods at the Abbot. "Yes, it was most upsetting... You should have seen the mess... Worse even than what that horde of Marek's did when they were here, if you can believe it."

Lorimis says, "I am not surprised... if she skips out on any more of her punishment send her to me... I will deal with the child myself.!" He waves at Zork, "Zork my friend hello! Come in, Lunch will be soon now we have chased FLicktail away from the pies," He laughs softly then perks up his ears, "Oh and Lacota good news! Caleb told me he intends to enroll as a Novice at the Feast."

Caleb nods "Yeah and learn more n cooking.I am good at soups and like oatmeal but need to get better at other things like scones and rolls and I want to learn"

Zork listens as they talk and chuckles at the Flicktail part, "Also most of de snow is gone and de rest quickly leaving, hopefully gone by the feast."

Lacota smiles at Caleb, resting a paw on his shoulder. "Well lad, that is the best news I've heard all week. As you intend to join the Order this spring, then I may as well inform you now of another thing I wanted to ask you about. As you become a Novice, it is my intention to take you on as my apprentice, Caleb... With yours and your parent's permission, of course..."

Lorimis says, "Ah that is good news Zork, thank you for letting me know. I will even think about holding the feast outside." He glances across at Lacota and chuckles, "Caleb can only be your apprentice as long as his other Novice duties do not suffer Friar. You know the rules. A Novice must work every job in the abbey, from cleaning and laundry to washing dishes to helping Benar tend the fields."

Caleb frowns a little at the long list of work, he then answers, "I will still do laundry, maybe on certain days I can and that same day clean and on days I work in here wash dishes after the meals. And other duties I can help where I can as well."

Zork nods, he listens as the others talk and grins, "The feast should be great fun."

Lacota shrugs. "I understand, Lorimis, but I also understand that I'm in my middle seasons, and I won't be around forever..." He pauses, then continues, "When my time comes, depending how things turn out, young Caleb here is my choice of successor... barring any beast objecting... But, that is a moot point for now. I have every intention of remaining here for many seasons to come..."

Lorimis chuckles softly, "No playing favorites Lacota, you know that'll only get you in trouble with others. But I am glad to hear Caleb has found a place for himself."

Caleb smiles, “Well I have a lot to learn before that happens and I am sure Friar Lacota will be around a long long long time and be like really old when before that." He goes to hug Lacota "I can ask mom and dad but I would like to be your apprentice"

Zork nods "Apprentices are good ta have.." He frowns in thought but buts whatever he was thinking to himself and smiles, "So how is every beast today anyways?"

Caleb says, "I am doing ok today"

Lacota hugs Caleb warmly, then nods to Zork. "I am well today, Thank goodness. How about yourself?"

Lorimis says, "Yes thank you Zork I am doing well. Little cold earlier and this cough won't go away but otherwise I am fine"

Zork nods "I am doing ok." He looks at Lorimis, "Well if it gets worse let Leon know, ya know just in case its needed don’t wanna be feeling bad at the feast."

Caleb smiles " I want to help make something simple for the feast, not sure what but something not too hard but that every beast would like"

Lorimis says, "Well Caleb I am sure Lacota can suggest something. Maybe you can make something for the Elder's table? I am sure we'd all love to have something made by you."

Lacota nods his head thoughtfully. "Some scones, perhaps? Or cookies? Or perhaps a delicious pie?"

Zork says, "I am sure your both think of something nice, something sweet even...maybe with strawberries or something, think they are in season right?"

Caleb smiles “I will think of something, maybe look in books or ask for ideas"

Lorimis says, "Well I wish you all the luck Caleb and look forward to seeing what you come up with."

Lacota says, "Indeed, strawberries are in season. Strawberry tarts might be just the thing."

Zork says, "whatever it be I am sure it will taste good. The feast I know will have a large cake for Flicky and Rayen, probably a very large one"

Caleb says, "Yeah Flicktail and Rayen are getting married then and..hmms" He thinks on an idea of what to make and smiles as one idea comes to mind he just needs to discuss it later with Lacota or with one of the other cooks.

Lacota nods again. "Yes, I'm baking a very large cake for the occasion.”

Lorimis exclaims, "Oooh cake, I do love your cakes Lacota!"

Caleb giggles a little, "Any idea on a flavor yet?"

Zork lets the two talk as he needs to go check on a few things so he slowly leaves the kitchen

Lorimis exclaims, "Now then you must all excuse me! I need to catch Elder Tomson before lunch!" He raises a paw and hurries out.

Lacota shrugs. "Not sure, as yet... I should ask Flicktail and Rayen what flavor they'd prefer."

Caleb nods "Sounds like a good idea." He sighs as he hears his father calling him "Got to go talk later"
