A not So Forgotten Past

This first part takes place when Leon was just 6 seasons old==

It was a sunny day in the southern edge of Mossflower, about as southern you can get and still be called Mossflower Woods, but the sunny day wasn’t making any beast feel better in the small cottage as a mouse maid lay very ill on a cot and the village healer, an old in his seasons hare, was in a panic, “We are out..OUT of it!”

A young mouse of about 6 seasons pokes his head into the infirm, “Out of what Mr. Angelo, can I help?”

Angelo turns and smiles, “Ahh Leon, yes you can I need Lungwort and you need to hurry lad and some Feverfew, it grows in the meadow that’s an hours walk from here, your sister is not doing well at all and I have been low on herbs since the middle of winter cause of a couple other beasts being ill. It’s finally spring so it should be growing now.”

Taran, the father to the two mice walks in as he over hears this, “Your sending Leon? Are you sure that’s wise Angelo?”

Leon nods and turns “Don’t worry Dad I know what both look like” He smiles “And I will return quickly promise!” He rushes out and lets them tend to his sister, Ginny.

Angelo sighs and chuckles, “Leon is doing well as a healer in training, do not worry. He knows the herbs in here better than the other healers I think, and he knows to be careful in the woodlands.”

Taran shakes his head, “I know I know but I still worry, I lost his mother due to illness and don’t want to lose my daughter as well” He smiles “Its spring and she wants to wed that, oh what was his name?”

Angelo answers, “Duncan I believe, yeah he will make a good mate. He was in here earlier checking on her.”

Taran nods and sits to wait on his young son’s return.

In the woods---

Leon was looking all over, he had found plenty of feverfew but not the lungwort he needed, he frowns as it was already getting dark, he then finally spots some on the side of the meadow on the small overhang over the stream, he goes over and pulls it off the rocks, it seems stuck so he pulls harder and gasps as he falls backwards into the stream, the herbs fall from his paws as he and them splash into the water, he coughs and tries to stay above the water as he can’t swim and has yet to truly learn. ”Help!” He grabs a passing log as it’s the spring flood season and frowns as he watches all the herbs he just collected get washed away.

A passing shrew boat catches sight of him and helps the poor mouse out of the flooded stream.”Ya ok there lad?” The kind shrew with the colored headband asks. Another shrugs “Of course he is ok Log-A-Log” The main shrew rolls his eyes as they argue back and forth.

Leon clears his throat, “Please..Stop arguing I need to get home, Ginny needs the herbs or she will get worse and die! I need the Feverfew and Lungwort.”

The shrews have a quick meeting and then address the mouse “Log-A-Log says we will help you, come to the camp.” To the camp they go and eat soup, bread and oatcakes, soon the herbs are found and given to the mouse, even an escort home as its nightfall.

Leon nods his thanks “Thank you so much Log-A-Log” He rushes into the infirm, “Dad! Angelo I have the herbs!”

Taran greets his son with a cold look of hate, there lying on the cot is Ginny, she has passed on to the dark forest as the older mouse glares, “How DARE you come to me now! Took ya sweet time! She is dead it’s too late! What did you do have a party!...You let her die, see this is your fault Leon, you’re a disgrace to me! To this village! To your family!”

Angelo frowns “Now Taran please, it’s not his fault, what happen Leon?”

Leon starts to stutter and is unable to say a word, the shrews explain the flooded river and saving him, how they helped him find the herbs and got him safely back to the small village, tears go down Leon’s cheek as he starts to head to his older sister, ”G..G..Ginny?”

Taran slaps Leon and shoves him away, “Don’t go NEAR her, in fact outta my site! You’re not welcome here! Leave now Leon! Get out of this village and don’t brother coming back, don’t even pack your no longer my son, just leave!”

Angelo frowns at Taran." Taran he is just a boy."

Leon tenses up, “B..But father, please!” Tears go down his face, “I ..the lungwort was stuck and the rocks slippery, and..I almost drowned, please”

Taran draws his short sword and points it at Leon, “Out of my site! Out of this village! Out of my life!”

Leon frowns, tears down his face he turns and flees the village and doesn’t brother looking back, he runs and runs and trips over a rock in the path, and curls up shivering, alone and now lost and nowhere to go.

As the days went by Leon manages to find a small den and makes it a temporary home, one of many on his now wandering days that was forced upon him. He turned bitter and never let anyone get close to him again, never staying any one place for too long, he learned healing and he learned to swim from beasts he meet, but he never was happy, always sad and always mad at the world, this was Leon many seasons ago.

Fast Forward to the Present day Redwall Abbey-----

Standing by the window he breaths in the cool fall air and smiles, he has on the robes of the Master Healer of Redwall, he has a nice cottage and as he walks back to the bed he looks down and smiles even more as he looks down at the sleeping forms of Dorarose, Caleb, and Lillymore..”My family…I am so happy your in my life, I be lost without you, I love you all.” He gives each a kiss before heading out to start his day, life is great!
