RW Abbey: Open Ground

The Open Ground is a place for feasts, good times and just general social meetings. The wide-open space allows a large group of beasts to gather upon the plush grass and chat. But it also allows access to many places of the abbey, towards the walls of the abbey is the Bell Tower. Notable abbey defenders graves alongside the plot of land the massive structure takes up. A staircase shrouded by a case of stone allows one to make their way to the busy infirmary. The large brass lined doors to the lower dormitory are also evident from this position.

Spring brings soggy grass -- though green, now -- in this open ground. The ground is saturated with melting snows and spring rains, causing muddy spots to dot the field here and there. Green growth is sprouting up everywhere, taking over the tiny bits of snow that can still be spotted hither and yon in secluded areas of the open ground. All and all a cheery scene, with the new growth and such -- but hazardous for the unwary.

Greased Pole

Its evening in the abbey and Oz had decided to visit a grave in the graveyard for a short while. He is now making his way back towards the main building.

Coming from the south, Aolani flies in low over the wall and approaches the open area within the walls of the Abbey. As she descends she begins to flap her wings hard to slow the approach for a softer landing and eventually touches down in the grassy field. The landing is a little less graceful than what she would normally manage, and closer inspection would reveal her feathers are ruffled and a bit dirty, which would seem to indicate she's had a bit of a rough time recently. Still, she folds her wings and notices Oz as she collects her bearings. "Oh hello! We meet again."

Oz slows as he hears the sound of wings and he does remember the voice, “You were by the pond I believe, if I am remembering correctly." He has his walking staff with him that he leans on for now as he waits for a reply.

Aolani nods as she walks closer to Oz. "Yes that was me. I guess I'm the Abbey's resident swan. Aolani is my name in case I didn't introduce myself at the pond, I can't remember. Today has been a pretty interesting day to say the least. I think I need a bath, and some rest would be nice too."

Oz smiles " I am Oz...dibbun caretaker of the abbey. A swan...well that’s interesting maybe the pond would work well for a bath then. Welcome to Redwall and I hope you do enjoy your stay"

"Nice to meet you Oz. So you take care of the little ones? That sounds like a job that would keep one pretty busy." Aolani questions curiously, then continues. "Also yes, the pond would probably be nice right now. I have enjoyed my stay so far, but today I met some of the 'not so friendly' beasts in the area. I guess I need to be more careful."

Oz frowns "I hope it was not in the abbey. I do know the roads are not always safe but I rarely leave the abbey and when I do it’s not very far." He gets back to the subject of dibbuns "As for dibbuns they are interesting and one can learn from them sometimes. They mind me fairly well and I do have helpers when needed."

Aolani shakes her head. "No, it wasn't in the abbey at all, in fact on foot I imagine it would be quite a distance from here, though certainly shorter by air. Stopped at a lake which turned out to have a small building at its side. Found a red lizard who ended up introducing me to several of his rather hungry 'friends'. My wings are sore and I think I'm missing a few feathers now, but at least I escaped relatively unharmed." She explains before happily switching to the subject of the dibbuns. "Doesn't feel like it was that long ago when I was young and had all my gray feathers, but I think you're right. Young ones do see the world from a different perspective, and sometimes they pick up on things that the rest of us miss."

Oz nods "Yes they do. There is one here who cannot hear or at least is mostly deaf, at first it was challenging to care for her but we learned together. She tends to stay close to me or a hedge maid here, Sister Ginny, who helps me mostly with the dibbuns. The dibbuns, as well as some novices still....call me Papa Oz. When I first came here I didn’t plan to stay, but I decided to live here and have for many seasons"

"I bet in overcoming that challenge you and your helpers learned a lot. My mother always told me that was what challenges were for." Aolani muses thoughtfully before switching to the subject of life at the abbey. "I can see why one would want to stay here. Despite how different I am from the others here, everyone has been nothing but kind and welcoming. It's really refreshing, and I think I may stay also. It beats what I was doing before in a lot of ways. Wandering the world is exciting at times, but more often it's lonely, and dangerous. I began to wonder what I was trying to accomplish. If I haven't found my flock in a few seasons, I may wander for the rest of my life and never stumble upon them."

Oz says, "Maybe staying here is best and you can make friends I am sure, maybe even help in times of need. I had a brother that wondered for some time, but then he choose to live here and did till the time of his death this past fall season"

"I think you're right. It would be so nice to have some friends. If you can't be with you're family anymore, that's the next best thing right?" She asks, as much directed back at herself as to Oz. "Of course I'd also be happy to help in any way I can. I'm not sure what you'd want me to help with, but surely there is something I can do for the abbey and all who live here."

Oz says, "I am unsure of anything right now. Things have calmed down some...some anyways." He frowns "We do have a missing dibbun"

Aolani blinks a bit, her voice taking on a hint of worry. "Missing for how long? I could certainly fly around the area and see if I can... see any sign of them. Do we have any idea how they went missing?" She questions, trying to learn all she can about what happened as she feels like this is a good chance for her to lend her abilities to the abbey.

Oz frowns "He has been missing for a few weeks. It was thought a wildcat has him but its also possible they are no longer in Mossflower, it’s possible they are dead, no beast knows"

Aolani shakes her head and tips her bill downward a bit. "Weeks, possibly with a wildcat... I must agree that certainly doesn't sound promising. Still, I'll have a look around when it's light out again. If there is any sign of them around, I'll do my very best to find it."

Flicktail walks along, his fur as white as a Swan looking at the abbey pond in the distance

Oz nods "Any help is gladly taken, but I am starting to fear the worse"

"I fear for the worst also after this much time, but I'll search for the dibbun anyway." Aolani offers to Oz with a hopeful tone before she spots Flicktail. Aolani has had a rough day and is rather startled to see a fox the abbey, she quickly spreads her wings as she turns toward him. "Stay back!" She cries.

Flicktail ears perk when he hears then sees the ginormous swan "Excuse me Marm, are you helping look for Xander?”

Aolani blinks, staring back at the fox for a moment as he calmly asks her a question while she's all worked up thinking he's going to try and eat her or something. Slowly she calms down and folds her wings into her back again. "Sorry... I didn't know there were any foxes in the abbey, and I got into a scuffle with a few that wanted to have me for dinner. Anyway, if Xander is the name of the missing dibbun, then yes, I was just speaking with Oz about it and offering to search for him from the air."

Flicktail says, "Well..I would like to have ye for dinner. We have some nice greens for ya. I would like you to help fine me friend xander....I have the sparra out looking as well marm"

Aolani can't help but chuckle a bit before nodding at his offer. "Actually dinner would be rather nice right about now as long as I'm a guest and not the main course, though a bath at the pond first is probably in order. I am happy to help look for your friend as soon as it's daylight again. Wouldn't do much good right now as I don't see so well in the dark. Do you have anything to go on? From what Oz was telling me, it sounds like Xander could be anywhere."

Flicktail says, "I used to have a swan friend named Cherry...I miss Cherry" He points to the pond "You can get a bath there marm"

Aolani blinks again at the mention of once having a swan friend. "Oh you did? I'm sorry you lost you're friend... What happened to this swan?" She asks curiously as she makes her way toward the pond.

Oz had been quietly listening as the two talked before speaking again "I did not know we had any other swans before"

Flicktail says, "the swan was very very old..He liked cherry pie..we found him one morning at the edge of the pond very still"

Aolani shakes her head sadly. "I see. I guess we all have to grow old sometime... I guess that's partly why I'd like to stay here rather than continue to wander looking for my lost flock. What if I never find them and I waste my whole life searching, and alone. At least here I can make friends and help others, and maybe find out what cherry pie is like." She offers as she heads into the pond and begins to rinse and preen her ruffled, dirty feathers.

Flicktail says, "Well you sure seem like a nice bird so may I ask a favor of you?"

Oz arches an eyebrow at Flicktail, "It is getting late Flicktail I may need to get inside soon, sometimes a dibbun will wake from a nightmare and I rather they not come outside looking for me"

Aolani glances back at Flicktail for a moment as she continues to preen her feathers, pausing long enough to speak. "Thank you, you seem like a nice fox also. My name is Aolani by the way, and sure, if it is something I am able to do, ask away." She then looks back at Oz. "If you need to go, don't let us keep you. I'm glad we got a chance to talk a bit more."

Flicktail nods to Oz "I won’t give up me search for Xander" He looks at the swan "If you lose a Primary wing feather may I have it? Please?”

Oz nods "I know you won't Flicktail, I just hope he can still be found. His mother worries"

Flicktail says, "When I find who has him, Papa, I will NOT be a nice abbey beast"

Aolani looks back toward Flicktail as she finishes preening and folds her wings into her back again. "Sure, that'll be no trouble at all. In fact, I should be molting soon, so I'll have plenty of feathers to offer."

Flicktail says, "Thank you, I paint pictures on the feathers as gifts"

Oz starts to say something else when a high pitched squeal is heard and it belongs to a dibbun otter who has managed to get out of the dibbun dorms and find the badger and latches on wailing. Oz bends down and picks up the dibbun otter talking softly to him, he then nods to the others "Excuse me..the child has had a very bad dream so I am heading inside, goodnight" And off he walks, dibbun in his arms
