How did tarts, lead to sadness?

From Redwall MUCK Wiki

RW Abbey: Kitchen

This is a long, narrow room with five large fireplaces set into one wall, and two equally large wood burning iron stoves set against the opposite wall. Several small, rectangular tables rest in here, but there are no chairs available. The rest of the wallspace is taken up by an entire array of shelves, cupboards, and counters which hold the day-to-day cooking supplies and utensils. The kitchen is clean and well maintained, and more recent efforts have been made toward organization of the cooking ware.

On the wall just right of the door leading into Great Hall is a neatly penned chart, which lists the names of beasts assigned to cooking duty as well as the dates and times they are scheduled. A small note above the chart urges residents to volunteer for at least a slot or two a week.

Outside, the last rays of sunlight are fading. The ovens are being allowed to cool.

Krystal has helped in the kitchens, helped to wash the dishes after a novice broke a plate and cut their finger on a sharp edge. She cleaned up the mess and finished drying the dishes and now sits down.

Zork had tried to sleep, and couldn't and tried to mediate and ended up deciding to forget that too so he slipped into the kitchens and looks around, and he did miss dinner as he took a nap earlier.

Krystal looks up and watches Zork curious, but she doesn't say anything yet. She just watches him quietly.

Zork grumbles a little and grins as he finds some apple tarts and sneaks one, but first he adds a little hot root to it and then nibbles it as he leans back in his chair.

Krystal manages a chuckle from where she is sitting and then quickly places a paw over her mouth.

Zork blinks after getting another apple tart and looks at the squirrel maid, he eats the tart and gets a 3nd one, "I..sort of missed dinner." He admits quietly.

Krystal nods" Just, the friar may dislike you nibbling the tarts and..what was that you put on the first one?"

Zork looks around “He’s not here lass.." He snags a 4th and sprinkles the hoot root on it "Hot root lass, tis good on oatmeal too." He grins leaning back in his chair to eat the tart.

Pearl enters the room and eyes the tarts hungrily. "Mind if I have one of those?"

Krystal sighs, she looks at Pearl and then the tray, well there was 8 and now there is 4, "Umm....I.." She then decides she can explain this later “Sure, you may as well." They are apple tarts.

"Oh, are we not supposed to be eating them," Pearl says apprehensively.

Zork waves to Pearl and glances back at Krystal, "Tell ya wot, I won't eat any other ones." He smiles finishing the one he had before Pearl came in.

Krystal says, "I think they are just leftover ones, I am sure he can make more of them"

"oh alright," Pearl says taking a tart and then jumps up to sit on a nearby counter top.

Zork smiles "Lacota usually don't care, umm too much."

Krystal says, "He does care sometimes"

"Well I care, these are really good," She said through a mouthful of tart. She swings her legs and flicks her tail in enjoyment.

Zork nods "We can tell him that and help him feel better, sides a late night snack once in a while not hurt any beast and I have not had a late night snack in a long while"

Pearl says, "Yes, tell him it was for a noble cause. "

Krystal smiles, she gets a tart, she did help wash and dry dishes after all, but she just takes one leaving the other two alone.

Zork chuckles a little and grins, “Least dibbuns are not in here, he be real upset with that"

"It’s a good thing for us too, more tart for us," Pearl says with a large grin. She then turns to the squirrel and introduces herself "Hi I’m Pearl"

Krystal smiles "Krystal I..help with the bees in the abbey."

Pearl says, "Yes, the father abbot told me about you the other night, nice to meet you,"

Zork nods, "Suppose so, all de dibbuns be sleeping now I think."

Krystal smiles "Oh? About me...I am not really special really, I just know how to calm bees and things like that, the bees like me"

Pearl asks, "They don't sting you?"

Zork says, "I still dislike bees, but they tend to leave me alone when in de orchards"

Krystal says, "I have been stung before, but only once. They didn’t know me too well yet and now they do and they are my...friends."

"Well I would defiantly say that is special, I love honey... bees not so much," Pearl says taking another tart.

Zork says, "No bees in de northlands, too cold really. May be why tis harder to grow a lot of good food. Did a lot of trading up north too where I lived""

Pearl says, "That makes sense. "

Krystal says, "Bees do not like the cold, they like it warm. I would not like a lot of cold either"

Pearl says, "Maybe that is why the bees like you so much, you think like them."

Zork says, "Ya get use ta it, then again I were born in de Northlands but thar were hard times, and good times. Thar were like 2-3 weeks of like springish weather, always had a feast then."

Krystal says, "Feasts here are nice also, the summer one was nice"

Pearl yawns and covers her mouth, "excuse me," She says and then rubs her eyes tiredly. "I should be getting to bed. It was nice meeting you Krystal and thanks for the tarts," she said slipping off the counter and heading for the door.

Zork nods, "Yeah...tis was nice. Most of it"

Krystal waves to Pearl."Goodnight"

Krystal looks at the last tart and sighs, great and then she tilts her head "Why just...most of it?"

Zork frowns, "Cause, I only remember first like half, part of de other half I got ill. De heat and..probably should of stayed at de abbey but I wanted ta go, ta have fun and laugh, chat with all me friends and family."

Krystal nods "Well there is always the one in fall, I bet Lacota will make it very nice like he always dos"

Zork frowns and goes oddly quiet and folds her paws in his lap, he speaks quietly “I am sure Lacota will lass."

Krystal walks closer, "Then, why would that upset you?"

Zork frowns, quiet and not answering right away he seems to find his voice, "Cause lass, I most likely won't be 'ere ta go to it. Tis why I risked getting ill ta go to de summer feast at the quarry."

Krystal ears flatten some, she may regret asking but she has to ask, "Why is that? Are you...gonna leave or something?"

Zork rarely gets upset in front of any beast, he rarely cries, well he does but not in front of others if he can help it and he lets a couple tears escape now.

Krystal frowns, and lays a paw on his paw, "A..Are you ok sir?"

Zork shakes his head no, "No, I'm not...but tis life. I lived a..good one, I think anyways I tried ta anyways. I try not to worry on wot will or won’t be or how me friends or family will be..after...well.."

Krystal frowns as after some thinking she gets what he means "Oh..I..I shouldn't of mentioned feasts and how there will always be one in the fall. It..it upset you...."

Zork folds his paws in his lap" You didn’t upset me lass, tis just..I may not be..alive by de time thar be another feast, I be in dis chair fer a reason and that reason be getting worse, not better."

Krystal frowns, in her mind she upset him by bring up the subject, she backs from the room and runs off to the kitchen path and outside, she is going to find a tree, climb it, and stay in it tonight...well least it’s a clear night.

Zork blinks "Lass!" He coughs as the yelling and the trying to not cry makes his throat hurt as he leans back in the chair and sighs softly.
