Salamandastron: Training Room

This is the training room for the hares of the long patrol.  The walls

seem to have taken a severe beating, more than likely not from stray

arrows missing the archery targets.  There are several of said archery

targets lining the west wall, each with small oak stands a good distance

off to hold arrows, hang a bracer, and rest a bow on.  The targets are of

simple design: a large, tightly wrapped bale of hay with a coarse paper

target on the front.  A wooden mannequin, in no better shape than the

walls, is in the northeastern corner of the room.  Besides that, several

wooden practice swords sit in a small pile.  On the eastern side of the

room is a small, makeshift wrestling arena consisting of two mattresses

tied together.  Then on the southern side of the room is a fitness area,

assembled from several pull-up bars, and a nice padded area to do push up.

Narrow, cylindrical weights (both wooden and metal) are pushed up against

the wall, along with a few straight metal bars for them to be mounted on.

Hares: Flint, male.  Felicity, female.

Flint is in the training room punching away at the punching bag over and over again. He has been in here the past few hours doing rounds of sit ups, jumping jacks, pull ups, push ups and the punching bag punched a few times. Sweat drips down his face.

Felicity enters the room and looks around.  She doesn't have a crutch or a cane anymore, and she seems to not be having any trouble walking at all as she pads silently over to her uncle.  "Uncle Flint?"  She says quietly.  She looks sad and worried.  "You....you okay?  Do you need to talk??"

Flint frowns and his good ear droops down as he drops to his knees, worn out and panting a little to maybe catch his breath, "I....just...." Yeah he has worked out a little too much today. He opens and shuts his paws as they are sore now.

Felicity gets down on her knees in front of him and goes to take one of his paws to very gently massage it.  "Uncle Flint, I'm not sure what's wrong.  I don't listen to gossip and nobeast has told me outright.  But I want you to know I'm here for you.  There is nothin' in this world I'd rathah do, noplace I'd rathah be, then here for you.  You can tell me what's wrong."  She looks him straight in the eyes, earnest and sincere.

Flint frowns and lets her take one of his paws, "I...have ta get better at paw ta paw, bally well close up fighting. I...I can't fail again...I can't." He holds back tears that threaten to come.

Felicity keeps a hold on his paw with one of her own.  Reaching up, she goes to place the other one on his cheek, lovingly, like she does her baby sister when Julia is upset.  "What makes you think that you failed?"  She asks gently.

Flint finally looks at her as he had been looking down, "I failed Windrose, wot if I fail ya next lass. I could not live with me self if I did"

Felicity furrows her brow.  "'Ow did you fail Windrose?  Is she alright?  I....I 'aven't 'eard anything about 'er.  I'm sorry.....I don't think ya could fail me.  You 'aven't so far...."  She's not doing a good job at this all of a sudden.

Flint looks like he is about to have  mental breakdown any moment, some have heard of Windrose and some have not, she was in another patrol division but he was looking to ask if she could transfer, "She..." He shivers and sort of cough sobs in front of her.

Felicity's ears flop as she guesses what happened.  "Oh, Uncle Flint..."  she goes to wrap him in a big hug and just let him cry.  She can be sad and miserable and sobbish later.

Flint gets out the words "She...died." He then does cry for maybe 10 minutes before he manages to ease up and cough a lot. He straightens up and takes a couple calming breaths.

Felicity just does her best to hold him until he's done crying, then she shifts into a more comfortable position.  Her ears flopped down, she looks at her uncle, trying to figure out what he's thinking and feeling.  "I am so sorry....."

Flint sniffs "I..I may go after de scum, just got ta train more and find his archer beast...maybe put my own arrow in HIM...least I be good at bow and arrow"

Felicity bites her lip and says very tentatively,  "Uncle Flint, I don't want ya to get all caught up in seekin' revenge.  I've been readin' some histories to Julia at bedtime, and I've been talkin' to Miss DoraRose, and I've been seein' that revenge makes beasts....different.  Almost /bad/.  They end up sometimes not lookin' any different from their enemies.  These beasts should be stopped, but I think....maybe, we should check our motives first.  Make sure what they are."

Flint frowns "This...wildcat killed someone and he killed one other time weeks ago as well"

Felicity goes to hold his paw again.  "The 'e needs to be stopped.  But are ya wantin' to kill 'im because he 'as 'urt you in a way nobeast should evah be hurt, or are you wantin' to stop 'im from killin' any othah beasts?"  She looks serious, like the whole mission of stopping the wildcat hangs on his answer.

Flint frowns and seems unsure how to answer that, he just goes silent

Felicity just smiles.  "That's okay, Uncle Flint.  You don't 'ave to answer me right now, or at all.  I just wanted to help you think about this."  She then goes to wipe his cheeks to make sure all the tears are gone.  "So, you want to train?  I think I might be able to 'elp you, dependin' on what ya want to learn, wot!  What were ya thinkin' about workin' on?"

Flint sighs, "The...wildcat prob'aly bally well long gone now anyways....I need to learn to better use the saber, to make sure something like this doesn't happen again"

Felicity 'hmmms' and taps her chin with a finger.  "I can use Mum's short sword, not the sabre.  But.....would ya like to spar with the wooden swords in 'ere?  I find it 'elpful to train against othah weapons."

Flint is still sad, not like that will go away that soon, but he is feeling less...lets go get revenge now...." Maybe lass, I just want ta be able to protect you and your sister. I also shouldn't of ask the ambassador to help me deliver a note ta Windrose's father...should of just told him meself."

Felicity shakes her head.  "Sometimes we need help to be brave, to do 'ard things.  I think you're very courageous."  She goes to hug him.  "And I'm not incapable.  I can fight like Mum, and I got Dad's speed.  My enemies rarely know what hit 'em, wot!"  She smiles as she adds, "Sometimes I think the world needs to be protected from Julia.  She an' 'er little DAB cohorts stole a pie yestahday.  They were a horrid sticky mess."

Flint blinks, ok this is new to him, "De...DAB? wots that?" He looks confused and manages a smile as he hugs her, "I...I can try ta remember lass"

Felicity chuckles.  "DAB.  It stands for Dibbuns Against Bedtime.  They're little rascals, all about 1 to 2 seasons old.  There's only 6 of them, but they cause so many problems, there might as well be 10 of 'em.  Julia got the idea from a book about Redwall that I read to 'er.  They like to cause problems and make messes, wot!"  She grins.  "But when they're good they're supah sweet."

Flint nods "Sounds...interesting"
